Last Week 3-2 (+ 3.5 units)
If you backed the Falcons last week you had to be counting your money after the home dogs vaulted to a 17-0 lead. Then add to that the generous 4 point head start that those clueless oddsmakers gave you and it was all lollipops and sunshine until the late game. But a not-so-funny thing happened. The Falcons returned to their old self-immolating ways and were blanked in the 2nd half to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Those clueless oddsmakers happened to be right on the money when they saddled the 49'ers as 4 point favorites. True enough, the final score was a San Francisco treat as the Niners prevailed 28-24.
However, there are a few wise guys that remain leery of the numbers 3,4,6 and 7 in the NFL. Yes, I'm talking about myself even though my record reveals I've been about as sharp as soft serve ice cream this season. I did in fact buy the hook and move the number on the Falcons to 4 ½ and I did have Over 48 in the game as well. Unfortunately I blew 2 units on the Falcons on the money line and split the late game with a big play on the Over in the Ravens/Pats tilt but backed Baltimore as a heavy traveling dog. We made 3 ½ units last week but it's clear we will bow out of this 2012 NFL season with a losing record after a winning 2011 campaign. Well, there's not much left to do except pick the side and the total in the granddaddy of them all. Let's go!

Baltimore Ravens vs. San Francisco 49'ers
If you are thinking for one moment that the Ravens are going to win this one for Ray then I must break it to you gently that there is no Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny is a downright fraud. That's not to say they won't win but if they do, it will be for themselves first and foremost. Of course if Baltimore does win, the media will run with the whole team of destiny thing and Ray Lewis's made-for-primetime pre-game locker room speech will be an instant YouTube sensation which will run uninterrupted on ESPN until spring training.
However you'll never hear that speech because the Ravens will lose to the 49'ers on Super Bowl Sunday. And they won't even cover the number. This year the Niners are the team of destiny and deserve to win the big one. As prolific offensively as the Patriots were this season, they always have a tough time against the Ravens. New England has a mediocre defense which was bolstered by the midseason acquisition of Aqib Talib at cornerback. Talib exited the conference championship early as did a host of other beaten up Patriots. It was easy pickin's for Flacco who targeted seven different receivers and made Baltimore fans remember why Anquan Boldin is such a special weapon in the Raven's arsenal.
But the team they're facing this week has a menacing defense and will make Flacco pay for any careless or errant throws. Don't look for Ray Rice to gain anymore traction this week than he did against the Patriots (48 yards on 19 carries). That means it's all up to Hurricane Joe to pick apart the 4th best pass defense in the league. I believe Flacco is a great quarterback against poor defenses but one who can struggle against the very best. He looked great last week but Colin Kaepernick and the 49'ers will rule this day.
