The Redskins battled but came up short last week against the Falcons while their Week 6 hosts, the Jets, are well rested after a bye. Let's chose which team to cash in our NFL picks with this Sunday.

Washington Redskins (2-3 SU, 3-2 ATS)
The NFL odds makers installed the Redskins as touchdown underdogs as they traveled to take on the undefeated Atlanta Falcons and many thought even those weren’t enough points to get the ATS cover. But Washington’s defense did what no other had been able to do and that was hold Matty Ice and his soaring Falcons to under 20 points after four quarters of play. Unfortunately for the ‘Skins, it was the overtime quarter that sank their ship and it had nothing to do with Atlanta’s prolific offense. Kirk Cousins tossed a gut-wrenching pick-six into the welcoming arms of Falcons corner Robert Alford. It proved to be the final nail in the coffin of Washington’s 25-19 loss in Atlanta.

While the Redskins agonize over their void at quarterback and an offense that ranks 25th in the league in points scored their defense has been doing the job. Washington’s defensive unit put the brakes on the Falcons’ juggernaut through four quarters only to see their quarterback Kirk Cousins toss his second of two interceptions at the most crucial time. Heading into their tilt with New York the Redskins rank 12th in points allowed (20.8 PPG), 12th in rushing yards allowed (97.6 yards per game) and 8th defending the pass (216 yards per game). Now if they can only score more points.

New York Jets (3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS)
London came calling in Week 4 and the Jets answered the bell. They defeated their divisional rivals the Miami Dolphins at Wembley Stadium by the score of 27-14 and easily covered the three-point neutral site spread that the NFL odds makers were hanging. Rex Ryan’s crew has done an admirable job of returning investments back to their backers with a 3-1 ATS record and must now take on a Washington team that has proven they too have a defense worth seriously considering.

Speaking of defense it exactly that which has gotten the Jets to where they stand today, a 3-1 straight up record and second place in the AFC East behind perennial powerhouse New England. New York leads the league in points allowed averaging a miserly 13.8 yards per game complemented by an 8th ranked rushing defense (94.8 YPG) and a 2nd ranked passing defense (186 YPG). Offensively New York lags with a 24th ranked passing attack (218 YPG) but have their rushing corps (ranked 7th averaging 127.2 YPG) to thank for their 13th ranked points scored averaging 23.8 points per game.

NFL Picks
I believe the average bettor will view this game with their eyes on the favorite as they often do. The Jets will be well rested while the public perception will be that the Redskins are deflated after hanging and banging with an undefeated Falcons’ squad only to literally throw their chance away at the end. I see it a bit differently and if I am to back one of these teams in my NFL picks then I am siding with the Redskins.

The Jets don’t scare me offensively as they have gotten it done this season with a rugged defense and shrewd game plans designed by Ryan and his staff. This is not the team that is likely to beat you in a track meet but slowly and methodically grinds away which may play well into the hands of Washington whose defense is adept at stopping the run and the pass. Look for this game to be played between the 30’s and grab the points.
