Thursday is a lighter day for the start of Week 3 of the NFL Preseason, but we still have a couple of interesting games going on this evening. Let’s take a brief look at some of these teams in the odds, and see what kind of betting value is on offer for your NFL picks.

Patriots vs. Lions

Most online sportsbooks have the Lions favored tonight by -2 ½ with a total of 46. Despite their skill player concerns, Tom Brady and New England have been cruising through the preseason, and now face the Lions in their dress rehearsal for the regular season. The Lions haven’t been cruising through by any means, as they got blasted by the Browns in Week 2, only scoring 6 points the entire game.

Guide to Picking NFL Preseason Winners

This week I think we can expect both teams to play their starters for most, if not the entire first half, and if that’s the case, I can’t help but like the Pats as underdogs in this one. I know all about Jim Schwartz’s great preseason record, but it sure didn’t show up last week. I already don’t think the Lions are a very good team, and the Pats are looking like they could win the AFC with college receivers. I see Bill Belichick putting his foot down on the gas tonight against a poor Lions team, making them a smart choice for our NFL picks.

The Lions and Patriots are already both really thin teams, but I think Schwartz will break first. Tom Brady should be able to pick apart the secondary of the Lions, and once the starters come out, I think the Pats will cruise away with a victory in the second half.

My Pick: Patriots +2 ½

Panthers vs. Ravens

The Panthers looked pretty bad against the Eagles in Week 2 of the preseason, while the Ravens got by the Falcons after a late 4th quarter touchdown. The NFL Odds for this game favor the Ravens at -3, and I think it’s the way to go in this one. John Harbaugh has been very good in his career in Week 3 of the preseason, and I think that trend will continue tonight. He is 4-1 SU in Week 3 of the preseason, and with the fight that the Panthers put up last week, I see no reason to think that the Ravens aren’t the play here.

This game will be played mostly by the starters in this game, and with the Panthers installing a new offense, they are much more likely to run into kinks like they did a week ago. In Week 2, the NFL Odds favorites were 10-5 ATS, and if that trend keeps going into Week 3 tonight, we should be very happy with a bet on the home team here. Although the public scares me some here, I think they have it right. I am laying the points with the Ravens.

My Pick: Ravens -3
