The NFL season is just around the corner and we’re back to sift through the Super Bowl XLIX odds in order to determine what movements have occurred and define where the sharp-action futures bets are.
Defending Champions Seattle Seahawks Top the Board
On the back of an inspiring victory over Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks were chalked as the hot favourites to runaway champions in the upcoming Super Bowl XLIX at +500. With the 2014-2015 NFL season fast approaching, the betting public has pushed odds even higher for Seattle Seahawks to repeat. They are now matched at +550.
It’s remarkable what a difference a year can make, how drastically betting opinion can change. The year prior to the Seahawk’s win, nobody was having anything to do with the upstarts from Seattle. Few believers were to be had, the bandwagon noticeably light on load. Fast-forward through a standout 2013-2014 season and watch agog as they deliver a bruising defeat to everybody’s fave Denver Broncos, everybody, all of a sudden, wants a part of Seattle’s NFL betting action. Funnily enough it’s not so improbable. The team is young with plenty of upside that a second straight Super Bowl is attainable, not to mention to win their Conference at +300 as well.
Denver Broncos would appear to be so last season. It’s the fickle nature of NFL betting: when everybody is all over Seattle Seahawks like a rash, similarly, you could say they are sooo over the Broncos. Super Bowl XLVIII dealt the betting public’s faith a sucker punch, so unexpected was the blowout defeat. What’s more, that faith dipped further when news of Eric Decker’s release was made public. Many pundits are questioning this significant offseason move, wondering whether it could turn into a huge mistake in the long run. Let’s face it Wes Walker – who retains his position – is a bit of an aging force, not too far behind Peyton Manning. Odds makers don’t seem to concerned though as they match Broncos as the top faves to win the AFC Championship at +240 NFL odds and as the second favourites at +650 to win it all. Clearly, they are putting all their stock into everything the Broncos accomplished up to the Super Bowl. That nightmare Sunday rendered a bit of a non-issue, just one of those god-awful days that should be forgotten.
The San Francisco 49ers came very close to repeating as NFC Champions last season, only for Seattle Seahawks to show them up. They remain a popular choice as sports picks, matched at +400 to win the Conference this year and at +650 to win outright, for good reason. Colin Kaepernick had a coming of age season in 2012-2013 when he carried the 49ers on his rookie shoulders into the Super Bowl. The 2013-2014 season came with high expectations as a result, expectations the young gun clearly struggled satisfying to the degree with which he did during the tail end of the previous season, when he received the starting nod. Such setbacks aren’t uncommon in sport. What NFL bettors must keep in mind is despite the so-called dip in form he still managed to carry the 49ers to within a match-win of a second straight Super Bowl. That has to count for something.
New England Patriots are kitted out as the third favourites on the Super Bowl XLIX runway. Naturally, Tom Brady and Co. couldn’t be anything less, so consistent have they been over the past few seasons. Of course, new artillery has been brought in during the offseason, to help Brady carry the team to the ultimate prize. It remains to be seen what starting decisions will be made that could have an impact on their perceived chance to win it all.
Green Bay Packers are the dark horses of Super Bowl XLIX betting. They are matched at +800 to win the NFC Championship and at +1200 to win it all. Last season, Aaron Rodgers injury last season derailed the Packers something huge as they were rendered largely ineffective. Recent reports that Aaron Rodgers (30-years-old) is coming off a solid spring, raring to get going should instil confidence in the Packers. So long as he remains healthy, they could be the team to spot.
Outsiders and Sleepers to Consider
Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts raised some eyebrows last season, namely with a statement making win over Peyton Manning and his Broncos. They are a team to spot in the coming season at +2200 to win it all. Kansas Chiefs started brightly but they couldn’t maintain the pace down the stretch. They are matched at +2800 to win it all, which still seems a bit of a stretch.
