Finishing off the first full day of preseason NFL, the Seahawks will head down the coast to play the Chargers.

The NFL odds for this matchup are in favor of the Seahawks here at -2.5, with a total of 35.5. Coming off of some bad news for the Seahawks, will they risk playing their starters too long in this game?

Harvin out

Newly acquired Percy Harvin is out for the majority of the regular season, after he was told by a 2nd doctor that he needed surgery to repair a tear in his hip. Some outlets are reporting that he could be back as early as November, but could also could miss the entire regular season.

This is a huge blow to the Seahawks. They already are without Sidney Rice who is flying to Switzerland to have a knee procedure. If you are drafting your fantasy league soon, go grab Golden Tate immediately, as he is now their only real threat left at WR.

These offensive injuries are going to play key roles in the Hawks’ game plans for not only this preseason game, but for the rest of them as well. For at least the offensive side, and probably the defensive as well, the Hawks are one or two injuries away from being done before the season even starts. I doubt Pete Carroll leaves his starters in more than a series in this game. Imagine how creamed he would get if another key player went down in the first preseason game.

Chargers home dogs

There’s nothing I like better than a home underdog in the preseason. Especially teams like the Chargers than finally got rid of Norv Turner and brought in a new head coach. The somewhat crappy personnel is still there, but they have some talent, and new coach Mike McCoy will want to give these fans a good show. Against a team that will likely be taking it easy after all of their WR injuries, and you have my bet of the day for Thursday.

Although we don’t know anything about McCoy’s preseason record, considering it doesn’t quite exist yet, all of these first year head coaches are going to want to get a win. It will have to be with 3rd and 4th string players who might not make the roster, but for the few series Phillip Rivers is in, I know he will be competing. Plus, the Chargers are loaded on offense after their 1st string.

The Sharp Pick

Pete Carroll is 7-5 SU in the preseason in Seattle, and he is also 3-0 SU in Week 1 of the preseason, but after the injuries and their pursuit of a Super Bowl this season, I see Carroll finally leaning towards the side of caution. Russell Wilson won’t play almost 2 quarters like he did in Week 1 last season, and I could even see them playing just one series if it’s long.

On the flip side, installing a new offense in San Diego after years of Norv Turner wont be easy, and I see the Chargers getting a bit longer of a run with their starting offense and likely defense as well. They have brought in a lot of great talents in the 2nd string of their offense. Guys like Danny Woodhead, Eddie Royal and Robert Meachem are all-new to this team and will need some time on the field this preseason. Why not start now if you’re McCoy? He has to know that making the playoffs is a long shot, so why not go out and try to get the win while evaluating your talent.

Plus, in the last eight preseasons, home underdogs are 52-31-3 ATS. That’s a cashing rate of almost 63%. For my NFL picks, I’m taking the points with the home team.
