In one of the final preseason games of 2013 in the NFL, the Skins and Bucs hook up in southern Florida. Let's have a look at the betting lines before making our NFL Picks.
The NFL Odds for this game favor the road Redskins at -2 ½, with a total of 37 ½. While neither team will risk injury to any of their starters, there could still be some value in these lines. Let’s take a deeper look into this game and see where we could possibly cash one last preseason ticket with the sportsbooks.
The Bucs barely escaped with a win against the Miami Dolphins in Week 3, and while neither team played very well, it was the Bucs who came away with the win. However the quarterback play from the Bucs was spotty at best. Josh Freeman threw 16 passes and only completed 6 of them for 59 yards and no touchdowns while in the game. A completion percentage of 37% is not going to get it done in the NFL, and although it would be very surprising if he played in this game, what comes after him didn’t look great either. Rookie Mike Glennon did have a touchdown in the game, however he only completed 3/9 passes for 44 yards. A total of 70 combined yards passing in an NFL game is unheard of.
The Skins on the other hand were without their first and second string quarterbacks against the Bills, but it didn’t matter as they won again in the preseason. Mike Shanahan has quickly become the best and most consistent coach in the NFL preseason, and he improved his already very impressive record in the exhibition games.
Rex Grossman and Pat White both played well for the Redskins, and those two guys will likely get plenty of run against the Bucs. It is yet to be determined if Kurt Cousins will start or even play in this game, but even if he doesn’t, I think the Skins have to be seen as the bet here.
Mike Shanahan may be a wizard who is always tinkering with his lineups, but one thing is certain, he owns the preseason both SU and ATS. Coming into this game, Shanahan is 3-0 SU this preseason, and in his career is 53-30 SU and 47-34-2 ATS in the preseason.
On top of his overall dominance, his teams have been even better in the final week of the preseason. Shanahan’s teams are 12-3 SU in Week 4 of the preseason, and with the quarterbacks he has at his disposal, I could easily see the Skins’ backups running through the Bucs in this game.
The Sharp Pick
Tampa would be foolish to play their starters in this game, but unfortunately for them, there isn’t much else after their starters on both sides of the ball. Going with a rookie quarterback in this game for Tampa will likely yield bad results, and with the depth at quarterback and on offense in general for the Skins, I could see a double-digit victory for Washington on the road in this one. I’m going with the better team and the better coach in this game, and I feel like the Skins are a great value for our NFL picks in this game.
My Pick: Redskins -2 ½ at William Hill
