The Rams are one of several road faves in NFL Week 2 when they descend on the Redskins. Are they the value NFL pick to come through on their favorable NFL odds?

St. Louis Rams (1-0, 0-0 away)
The St. Louis Rams orchestrated one of the biggest week 1 upsets when they defeated the 2013 Super Bowl champions Seattle Seahawks at home. The thriller featured end-to-end action with both sides trading the lead. With just minutes left in the game, the Seahawks had the lead and looked all but certain to win. When, all of a sudden, the Rams rallied to level the score 31-31 and send the game into a nerve-wracking overtime.

Nick Foles led a brilliant drive down the field, albeit it resulted in just a field goal and a slim 34-31 edge. Rams defense, though, stepped up to the plate and sealed the deal when they denied Seattle a successful counterattack. Tale told, Rams claimed the unlikely 34-31 win; that is according to the NFL odds.

Rams (+3.5) were the biggest home underdogs to cash at the sports betting window over the highly-fancied Seahawks – top contenders in Super Bowl 50 NFL betting markets going into the season and until week 1. They aren’t so anymore. That was the biggest fallout of week 1 NFL betting: the slight downgrade in Seattle’s NFL odds in Super Bowl 50 futures. They are now trading slightly behind the Green Bay Packers (+500) at +550 NFL odds. The Rams did that, prompting many to take another look at these NFC West contenders.

Washington Redskins (0-1, 0-1 home)
Washington Redskins are looking towards a second straight home game and a second straight opponent that figures to have stout defense this season. As such, they are matched once again as the home underdogs across the board, at +160 to win straight up and as the 3.5-point home pups. Can the Redskins clinch their first win of the season over the giant-slaying Rams?

Week 1 finished on rather disastrous note when Jarvis Laundry returned a punt for a touchdown to give the Dolphins the first lead of the game in the fourth quarter, a lead that the Dolphins held on to the bitter end. Prior to that one unfortunate play for the Redskins, they’d dominated the Dolphins on the stats sheet and looked to be well on a path to the unlikely upset as the 4-point home dogs.

To be fair, it’s only one game of the season. Too soon to panic, but lots of time to hit the reset button. The positives for the Redskins were that they did come out of the gates strong and did measure up to the Dolphins early on when they took the lead in the game (10-0 at one point). Kirk Cousins threw for 196 yards and a touchdown, continuing his strong preseason form that practically won him the starting job (RGIII’s concussion notwithstanding).

NFL Betting Verdict
The St. Louis Rams are out to prove that they are the real deal in a very tough NFC West division that looks to be more evenly matched than in previous seasons, if the first week is any indication. Three out of four NFC West teams were winners in week 1, including the Cardinals and the Rams. Competition is only going to heat up and the Rams will head into the nation’s capital with a set game plan in order to clinch a probable win over a side that is still beatable in more ways than one. All that amounts to a solid NFL pick in our opinion on the Rams as the road faves to win at -180 NFL odds and cover as the 3.5-point road faves.

Naturally, it’s important to not get carried away with week 1. It’s also possible the Rams will suffer a hangover effect after beating the Seattle Seahawks in week 1. But we’re confident the Rams have that slight edge over the Redskins: they are solid on both sides of the ball and they have the added edge with special team plays.
