The city of Pittsburgh had to watch in angst as their arch rivals won it all this past season. Now a new season is coming, and the Steelers are trying to gear up for another run at the playoffs and possibly a Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl odds have the Steelers pretty modestly prices, so should they warrant a future odds bet this summer, or should we wait for greener pastures?

Super Bowl (+1800)

The sportsbooks have the Steelers right at the same level in the future odds as the Ravens this offseason, but the NFL odds of 18/1 is nothing to get really excited about. Both teams will have their flaws once again, but both are talented enough to make a run. I think this number is right on par with where it should be. Although they will likely make the playoffs in a weak AFC, it remains to be seen what shape they will be in once the season come around. Personally, I’m not quite a believer in the black and yellow this offseason for a Super Bowl win.

AFC (+800)

Bet365 has the Steelers at +800 to win the AFC, and while I just doubted them to win the Super Bowl, for argument’s sake I’ll give you some reason to be optimistic about a good season. If they can get their defense in order, Pittsburgh could have enough to do something somewhat similar to what the Ravens did last season, which is get hot at the right time. We’ve seen it more than once out of Ben Roethlisberger in the past, and they till have a good team. They had a nice draft, but they still need to fill some holes. I will say this, if they go any higher in the future odds, a small value bet on the Steelers to win the AFC might not be a bad idea for your NFL picks

My Take

Even though I do slightly believe they could win the AFC, at this point I need to see more out of the Steelers to garner some confidence. Pittsburgh did not have a great free agency. The only one of their priority guys it seems they kept was Larry Foote at ILB. Granted they didn’t have much money to spend, but this team is going to have to get better on paper seemingly before they warrant a bet in the future odds.

Ben Roethlisberger had two very good teams when he won his Super Bowls, and this team before us is far from it. I think in the end I see the Steelers almost exactly as I see the Baltimore Ravens in the future odds, no value currently. It wouldn’t surprise me to see the Steelers and Ravens as co-favorites to win the AFC North this upcoming season.

All in all though, I’m selling the Steelers. They lost James Harrison, Mike Wallace, Willie Colon, Rashard Mendenhall, Keenan Lewis and both their backup safeties. That’s a lot of depth that now will be thrown onto rookies. Sell away on the Steelers for now and wait.
