Carolina has won and beaten the spread six times in a row. Will those making NFL picks be able to back a road favorite off a huge contest against the betting odds?

Can Carolina Sustain the Momentum or are they do for a Spill?

The Panthers are No. 5 in both power rankings I track and they proved they are legit by beating San Francisco and New England in consecutive weeks.

With Carolina in a different stratosphere these days, are they ready for the rigors of maintaining that edge against lesser competition? The Panthers last winning campaign was 2008 and not many faces are around from that crew.

For starters, head coach Ron Rivera (Riverboat Ron as dubbed by Jon Gruden) has to coach up his club and deal with playing one day less of preparation and trying to push the right buttons so his team is not flat for a winnable road test in South Florida.

Rivera also has work around with his team not relishing their success too much. Winning six straight in heady stuff, particularly the last two contests and preparing in the same manner can be a challenge with all the accolades coming Carolina’s way.

Miami off two outright home upsets will have the attention of NFL football handicappers and those making NFL picks alike.

Dolphins Still Have Plenty to Play For

After being in the news for all the wrong reasons, Miami players and coaches were able to exhale after squeezing by San Diego 20-16 as field goal underdogs. This leveled the Dolphins record at .500 and kept them in the chase for the final AFC wild card spot.

While the NFL has its crime-fighters hanging around the Miami football offices trying to find blame in the Incognito-Martin episode and possibly other workplace issues, head coach Joe Philbin will be diligently working to have his players focus on winning football games.

Considering all the hoopla, the Fins makeshift offensive line played exceptionally well last week seeing this was the first time this contingent had ever played together. "They did a great job," Ryan Tannehill said of his offensive line.

An upset of the hottest team in the NFL would be extremely important for a club which will be on the road three of the next four weeks.

NFL Betting Odds and Matchup Numbers

Sportsbooks sent out the ‘Cats at -3.5 and by late Monday night after holding off (literally) the Patriots, they leaped to -5, before cooler heads prevailed and they settled at -4 on Tuesday afternoon. With Miami’s underperforming defense ranked 21st, Carolina is 8-1 ATS versus stop troops conceding 350 or more yards a game the last two seasons.

The total has risen a point to 41 and the Dolphins are 14-6 OVER when catching digits in South Florida.

 Carolina wins and covers by…

Pounding the rock against a suspect Miami front seven which is 25th against the run and surrendering 122.6 yards on the ground. With a group of running backs who hit the holes hard and Cam Newton’s ability to escape, the Panthers should be able to move the chains and have success in the pass-action passing game.

The Carolina defensive front has to be salivating in taking on the Dolphins O-Line, since they can dominate the line of scrimmage anyways and will face the line which allows the most sacks.

Miami covers and possibly wins by…

The offensive line limiting negative plays in bunches and Tannehill having a tremendous outing. Dolphins offensive coaches have to help their quarterback with a game plan which features TE Charles Clay a vast amount and typically inconsistent running backs Daniel Thomas and Lamar Miller have to have their A-Game.

It is hard to figure what is wrong with defensive linemen Cameron Wake, Randy Starks and Paul Soliai, but it is time the front four to start earning and stop cashing paychecks. If this group plays to their ability, their team can beat the NFL odds this Sunday.
