New York is not without their uncertainty, but they do appear to be the favorite in the division. Should we look at the Giants in the future and game odds as having value, or being overvalued?
The Giants are fairly priced at 20/1, which puts them just outside of the top ten teams in the NFL Super Bowl Odds. With every other team dealing with problems as well, the Giants’ problems seem small. If they could just pay Victor Cruz and solidify their running back position a bit more, the Giants might be very undervalued as they stand today. New York might have a better defense than they did last season, as they have been trying to sure up their secondary. They brought in Ryan Mundy to play safety and even though they will still likely give up some yards, when you have the pass rushers that the Giants do, you don’t need to have shut down corners. If the Giants defense can improve and get hot like they did in 2007 and 2011, 20/1 might be a bargain for our NFL picks.
According to the NFC future odds, the Giants should be one of the playoff teams coming out of the NFC. However the Giants have been given a significant upgrade in the future odds considering their finish last season. Despite finishing 9-7, the Giants missed the playoffs last season and were left to simmer in their postseason struggles. With the NFC so stacked this season, especially the teams that are directly above the Giants right now, I can’t see New York having value. They will likely make the playoffs, but looking at any of their likely opponents in the first round of the playoffs, their fate might be one and done as they currently stand. The Giants do have the capability to get hot and make a run, but as it stands now we can’t get past the questions in order to look at the future.
Through the draft and free agency, the Giants have made it perfectly clear that they are going to improve their defense. This season has had that theme with a lot of teams, but the Giants had one of the worst defenses in the NFL last season, and it is almost certainly the reason they missed the playoffs.
The Giants are slightly overvalued in the future NFL odds, but that shouldn’t come as a surprise. This entire division is overvalued almost every season, but one of them has to win the division. The Giants and Skins seem to be the best bets for that, but until we have odds it is tough to make a case for either one.
I can say that if the Giants can answer their questions on offense, I think they will have a lot of value both this season and possibly in the NFL Future Odds, but it may be just a little to early to tell.
