The Buffalo Bills’ preseason has taken a turn for the worse, as they prepare to finish out their exhibition schedule against the Detroit Lions Thursday.

Let’s take a closer look at the NFL betting odds for this non-conference matchup at Ralph Wilson Stadium, with the opening kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.

Building momentum

Detroit is 2-1 straight up and against the spread during the 2013 preseason, which includes a 40-9 victory over the New England Patriots as 2.5-point home favorites last Thursday, while going OVER the betting total for the second time in three contests.

NFL handicappers need to realize that the Lions’ first-team offense accounted for just a single touchdown, with quarterback Matthew Stafford finishing 12-of-25 for 166 yards and a scoring strike.

A turn for the worse

Buffalo was feeling good about itself after picking up back-to-back wins in the first two weeks, but it suffered a humiliating 30-7 setback to the Washington Redskins as one-point road underdogs last Saturday.

The Bills were outgained by 297 yards in the affair, and potential starting quarterback Kevin Kolb may have suffered a career-ending concussion.

It’s a devastating injury, considering that rookie signal-caller EJ Manuel went down with a minor knee injury versus the Minnesota Vikings on Aug. 16.

Hill and Moore

Shaun Hill and Kellen Moore will likely carry the load offensively for the Lions, as there’s no reason for Stafford to step on the field, especially with No. 1 wide receiver Calvin Johnson continuing to sit out with a bruised knee.

Detroit is still searching for some dependable options in the passing game, but running back Reggie Bush has fit in nicely.  He caught five passes for 103 yards versus the Patriots.

Desperate times

NFL handicappers will be monitoring this game closely due to the Bills’ quarterback situation, as the franchise tries to create some renewed depth at the position with the signing of Matt Leinart and trading for Thaddeus Lewis.

First-year head coach Doug Marrone will likely start Jeff Tuel in front of the home fans, as he’s received a significant amount of snaps in camp—completing 31 of 43 passes for 299 yards and a pair of touchdowns with no interceptions in three games of action.

I’m going to recommend that readers play the OVER for their NFL picks, as the Lions need to continue their search for playmakers to play opposite of Johnson, while the Bills need to put the ball in the air due to their dire situation under center.
