The NFL odds are favoring the Lions at -4 in this one, with a total of 36 points. Who will pull their starters early in this one, and who will try for the win rather than evaluate the playbook?
While it hasn’t shown in the regular season very much, Jim Schwartz tries to win in the preseason, and win he has. In his tenure with the Lions, Schwartz is 12-4 SU and 11-5 ATS in the preseason over the last four seasons, and after a 2-2 SU preseason 4-12 SU regular season in 2012, you can bet that he is dying to get back on the field in front of his home fans after a win.
Even if it’s the preseason and doesn’t count, Schwartz is still going to try and win this game, but the spread of -4.5 is tough in a preseason game. What the Lions do have going for them is they need to round out their roster, especially on offense. After Matt Stafford and Calvin Johnson get their series on the field, the 2nd and 3rd string running back and some of the offensive line jobs are up for grabs in Detroit. I think that might play for and against the Lions in this game, but can you really argue with an 11-5 ATS record in the preseason?

Rex’s hot ass
It must be hard to be Rex Ryan’s bum right now. It’s been on fire for the better part of a year, and he may not last much longer unless he acquires a major fire extinguisher. The Jets are coming into this game with a quarterback battle however, and that may play well into their strategy.
Even though I expect Schwartz to try and win the game, Rex needs this game way more than Schwartz. If both of these teams go 0-4 SU in the preseason, Rex is the only one who might get fired for it. Ryan is only 6-10 SU and 7-9 ATS in his preseason-coaching career.
The Jets have a lot to figure out for their roster this preseason, especially on their already very thin offense. They need to use this game to not only start their quarterback battle, but to see who will be in the WR depth chart and more.

The Sharp Pick
It hard to bet against Jim Schwartz in the preseason, and it’s even harder to bet on the Jets for anything, and that’s why I have to go with the Lions here for my sports picks, even though the spread is rather large for a preseason game. Last year Matt Stafford played three series to start the game, and I could see him and some of the other starters on offense getting some run in this game for the home fans. Reggie Bush and Calvin Johnson likely won't play a whole lot, but I could see Stafford and Shaun Hill taking care of most of the first half for Detroit. If that’s the case, my NFL picks love the Lions' chances of covering in this one.
