Week 9 NFL betting Recap
Week 9 of the NFL season served up a ton of surprises and upsets: Titans beating the Saints? At the Superdome? All while Mariota comes off injury? Huh? Colts upending the Broncos and the Panthers underscoring their winning season with a big win over the Packers were upsets according to the NFL odds, but not entirely shockers. There was always a possibility those games would go in favour of the home dogs rather than the road faves –just some of our missed cues in straight up NFL picks last weekend.

Nevertheless, we still managed to finish strong with an 8-5 record overall to improve to 76-56-0 for the season (See Table 1) with our straight up NFL picks. Not too bad.

Bills vs. Jets
Bills trampled the Dolphins 33-17 in week 9 NFL betting to improve to 4-4 SU on the season before a pivotal clash with the NY Jets (5-3). It’s the second divisional matchup in a row for the Bills, but one that is personally significant to coach Rex Ryan. We’d wager nobody’s looked forward to this game more than Rex. Bet he’s glad his Bills are finally healthy too and he’s envisioning all kinds of vengeance to unleash in order to get his vindication. The Jets are also coming off a 28-23 win over the Jaguars on Sunday, but it looked dicey towards the end. Some allowances must be made for the injuries they are dealing with right now, but a better team than the Jaguars could have capitalised on those and dealt them a Loss. They won’t be always so lucky with scheduling. As it is, they did eke out the win and head into this pivotal AFC East showdown with momentum.  Neither side is going to want to come out on the wrong side of this game, making for a riveting contest and a tossup on our NFL picks. It could go either way and NFL panels are going back and forth on this one, but we’re hanging our hats on home advantage and a solid Jets defense.

Panthers vs. Titans
Panthers upset the Packers in week 9 NFL betting to remain unbeaten on the season, the only NFC side that still is unbeaten this season, mind. The Titans orchestrated an upset of their own in week 9 when they beat the Saints at the Superdome with Marcus Mariota coming off an injury. It goes without saying, few would have predicted that outcome for their NFL picks with any confidence – just goes to show just how unpredictable this season is. In any event, there are no surprises on the NFL odds board: Panthers are firm road favorites, while the Titans are expected home underdogs. Panthers are riding a 12-game winning streak during the regular season that goes back to last season’s week 14 and NFC South title winning run down the stretch. Of course, winning streaks do end. Often when least expected too. Could it be here? It’s unlikely really, but if you are brave enough to make such an NFL pick then go for it. We’re sticking to the Panthers, who really should be getting more respect than they are at NFL betting exchanges.

Bears vs. Rams
The Bears are coming off a 22-19 win over the Chargers on Monday Night Football, rounding out week 9 NFL betting in the books on an upset note. Jay Cutler is showing marked improvements this season as he lifts the Bears to 3-5 SU and 2-2 SU on the road. Against the Rams, the Bears face a stiff opponent coming off a bitter 21-18 loss to the Vikings on the road. The Rams are 4-4 SU and 3-1 SU at home with a 9-point winning margin that includes a win over the Seahawks in week 1. As good as the Bears showed they could be in week 9 with the win on the road over the Chargers, back-to-back road games and a short week could inspire against them. This Rams side has plenty of upside too, more so than the Bears do right now. They’ve just gone an add Wes Welker to their roster on Monday after the NFL suspended wideout Stedman Bailey. Walker is a seasoned veteran, who’s played with some of the best quarterbacks in the game and gives Nick Foles an added offensive punch. We like the Rams here on our SU NFL picks.

Browns vs. Steelers
Johnny Manziel and the Cleveland Browns are coming off a 31-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in Thursday Night Football for week 9. It marked their seventh loss of the season, fourth straight loss since beating divisional rivals Baltimore Ravens on the road. Provided Josh McCown is healthy for Sunday’s clash with the Steelers, he should get the start. Otherwise, it’ll be more of Johnny Manziel for Cleveland fans. The Steelers, meanwhile, are coming off a crucial 38-35 win over the Raiders, a result that they accomplished in spite of Big Ben's injury. In fact, the Steelers seem to find ways to win despite the quarterback carousel. Landry Jones is slated to start for the Steelers, his second start this season. He’s done really well this season when called up as a mid-game stand-in quarterback. However, his lone start on the season didn’t go down too well. A 23-13 loss in Kansas City in week 7 NFL betting. Browns are 2-7 SU on the season with a 7.8-point losing margin. Steelers are 5-4 SU and 3-2 SU at home with a 6.2-point winning margin. This is a tossup for our NFL picks, particularly with all the quarterback question marks on both sides of the coin. However, Tomlin has been managing this team very successfully so far and navigating through the injuries admirably. If Landry can do what he did when taking over a game from an injured quarterback, the Steelers should be in good shape to win at home.

Cowboys vs. Buccaneers
The Dallas Cowboys suffered their sixth straight defeat on Sunday Night Football, slipping to a 38-27 loss to divisional rivals Philadelphia Eagles. They look to avoid a seventh straight defeat when they take on the Tampa Bay Bucs in week 10 of the season, marking their last game without Tony Romo calling the shots apparently. Can Matt Cassel handoff the Cowboys to Romo on a winning note? On paper, this looks like a winnable game, which enhances Cassel’s chances and has oddsmakers sending the Cowboys into this game as the marginal road underdogs. However, this Tampa Buccaneers side has shown spirit over the last four weeks by winning two of the last four including an upset over the Falcons. They very nearly beat the Redskins too, only to lose 31-30 in Washington. Most recently, they are coming off a 32-18 loss at home to the Giants. Bucs take advantage of a Tony Romo-less Cowboys.

Lions vs. Packers
The Green Bay Packers are riding a two-game losing streak having lost to two very good teams on the road this season: the Broncos and Panthers. Both games saw the Packers offense shutdown and their defense rendered insignificant. It wasn’t enjoyable viewing for Cheese heads around the country. Fortunately, week 10 has the Packers back home where they have a great chance to put things right again at the expense of divisional rivals Detroit Lions. Indeed, this matchup couldn’t have come at a better time. Lions (1-7 SU) have the worst defense in the league, which is a perfect soothing balm for Aaron Rodgers chipped self-confidence after being stifled for almost seven quarters combined over the last two weeks. He did rally the Packers late to close the gap to 37-29 on the score board this Sunday, but missed a crucial opportunity to tie the game in the dying minutes when he failed to spot a wide-open Randall Cobb, throwing an interception instead. It was the Tablet slam heard around the stadium. Look for a pretty T-off Packers to bounce back in a big way here.

Jaguars vs. Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens are 2-6 SU on the season ahead of week 10 NFL betting, which is a shocking record few would have predicted at the start. It prompts the debate whether the Ravens are really as bad as their record suggests they are. Many NFL bettors are of the opinion the Ravens are a good team but victims of a tough (unfair even) NFL schedule. They’ve had a bye week to regroup and recollect – they really needed the time off, not to mention a winnable game to look forward to and, mainly, at home for a change. The Jaguars are 2-6 SU and 0-4 SU on the road with a 12.2-point losing margin. You’d think the Ravens can take this one, right? If they don’t, everyone is just going to have to accept that they were wrong and the Ravens are just plain bad. But what if they really are that bad and nobody dares to say it about a respected team coached by one of the best in the game? Let’s face it, they really don’t have a whole lot to play for with the Bengals practically running away with the division and Steelers limping determinedly behind them. Jaguars, by contrast, still have something to play for in an anaemic AFC South division that has just been hit hard with the news Andrew Luck is slated to miss 2-to-6 weeks, which puts the Colts bid to win the title in jeopardy. With so much to play here how can you not make this bold NFL pick. It’s quite possible that a team with a losing record on the season will emerge into the payoffs out of this section. Do the Jaguars fancy making a run for it? They just might.

Dolphins vs. Eagles
Eagles received an emotional boost on Sunday Night with a win over the Dallas Cowboys to improve to 4-4 SU. They’ve just won three of their last four games, which is a positive sign that suggests they might be turning things around. The Dolphins, meanwhile, slipped to their second straight defeat under Dan Campbell. In hindsight the back-to-back winning streak to start his reign now looks to be all smoke and mirrors, nothing more than beating up on weaker opponents. If the Eagles can keep rolling, this is a game they should win at home.

Saints vs. Redskins
Saints lost to the Titans last weekend, which was a heavy blow to their playoff upside. In more ways than one, this is a must-win game for them in the nation’s capital against one of the most unpredictable and inconsistent sides in the league. The Redskins are just 3-5 SU on the season, but 3-1 SU at home. Although all their wins this season have come on home turf they are getting no love on the NFL odds board as they are the marginal home underdogs. Something about this game feels like a trap. The Saints should win but the Redskins could win. It’s a complete and utter tossup.

Vikings vs. Raiders
The Raiders offense has really lit up over the course of this season and that has Raiders nation tizzy. Each week we predict the Vikings are going to stub their toe but somehow they continue to defy our predictions and climb NFL power rankings. They’ve won four in a row to improve to 6-2 SU on the season and rival the Green Bay Packers atop the NFC North. There’s just something not right about that picture – the Vikings ahead of the Packers in the standings? This is the game where the Vikings finally trip up. It has to be. The NFL odds aren’t on the board at the moment because Teddy Bridgewater hasn’t been cleared to play. Nevertheless, we’re going with a tentative pick on the Raiders.

Chiefs vs. Broncos
The rematch between the Chiefs and the Broncos is going to be one of the better matches of the weekend, one assumes. There’s the grudge aspect after the Chiefs lost at home to the Broncos in week 2 on a fumble by Jamaal Charles in the dying seconds. Then there’s the fact that the Broncos slipped to defeat in week 9 in Indianapolis, falling well short of expectations across NFL betting platforms. In spite of the divisional rivalry aspect of this game, it's Mile High where the Broncos are imperious. Look for a bounce back performance by Peyton Manning and the Broncos defense.

Patriots vs. Giants
There’s a lot of trepidation about this matchup with many NFL bettors predicting this could be the game that serves up one of the biggest upsets of the season. Giants are unpredictable and they are notorious for depositing late pushes in a season after slow starts. Then there’s the history between these two outfits that suggests Eli Manning and the G-men could get the better of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. All that is well and good and fundamentally sound prognosticating for your NFL picks. We’re just not buying it though. We have to see it to believe it.

Cardinals vs. Seahawks
If there’s a potential for an upset in week 10 NFL betting it could be this NFC West matchup. Cardinals lead the division with a 6-2 SU mark comprised of a 13.8 winning margin. The Seahawks are sat third in the division with a 4-4 SU mark, which includes a 2-1 SU mark at home down to wins over the Bears and Lions. Most recently, they suffered a home loss to the Panthers. Seahawks don’t often lose at home and certainly not in back-to-back games. Just like Aaron Rodgers hasn’t lost back-to-back games since 2010, the Seahawks could potentially suffer their first back-to-back home losing streak since 2010.

Texans vs. Bengals
The Texans and Bengals close out Week 10 NFL betting on Monday Night Football’s billing. The Bengals put an incredible 8-0 SU record on the line when they welcome the Texans, who are coming off a much needed bye week to regroup and refocus. The Texans are second in the AFC South and with a shot to clinch the divisional title much improved after the word of Andrew Lucks injury came out today. That’s incentive to play their hearts out and serve up some hard knocks under the primetime lights. Could this really be another trap game on the week’s schedule that potentially surprises all and sundry? Everybody knows they can trust Andy Dalton to be at his best when playing at 1 pm EST on Sunday. Granted he led the Bengals to victory under Thursday’s primetime lights over the Browns, but the Texans defense could give him some fits. It’s a long shot on your NFL pick, best left for the brave hearts out there. Call us crazy, but we’re going to be so brave. Good luck to us. Yikes.
