NFL Picks - Falcons vs. Raiders Offers Great Teaser Value In Week 2

Atlanta Falcons players walking in the field

Atlanta heads as underdogs against a Raiders team still riding high from their Week 1 win. The sportsbooks are expecting a high scoring affair with a total of 49 ½ or even 50, so with sharp odds, what can we do to make a solid play on this late-afternoon contest?

Where’s The Defense?
Both of these teams proved that their defenses are either a work in progress if you’re a Raiders fan, and nonexistent if you’re a Falcons fan. Oakland improved a lot over the offseason, but Drew Brees carved them up during Week 1 and while Matt Ryan and the Falcons are not as potent an offense as the Saints, they are still dangerous.

That is if their top two receivers are able to play this week. Both Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu are nicked up after one week of football. Both sprained their ankles in Week 1, but both were limited participants in Wednesday’s practice. As long as they continue to progress through the week, it seems like their odds of playing in this one are good.

As long as they are in the game, Atlanta has a chance to at the very least keep this within one or two scores by the end of the game. While I doubt they are going to upset Oakland at home, the Falcons could surprise some people in what should be an extremely high scoring game.

The total has gone up even in the middle of writing this, make sure to double check your NFL picks. Right now almost every sportsbook has the total up to an even 50 points. This is not only because of the offenses, but the Falcons’ defense gave up 31 points and it really was just the secondary. Jameis Winston had four passing touchdowns, so with an even better arm in Derek Carr waiting in Oakland, don’t expect the Falcons’ secondary to suddenly get their act together.

The Sharp Pick
This game is tough and I’m tempted to lay off entirely, but I think there could be some nice value in a teaser. Using 5Dimes for a two-team, six-point teaser, we can get the Falcons at +10 ½ with the over set at 43 1/2. Luckily, 5Dimes is one of only a few sportsbooks with the total still sitting at 49 ½, making the value on this play enough to make a one-unit play.

Both teams should easily have at least 22 points, while the Raiders have 30-point upside if the Falcons’ defense doesn’t come to play. On the other side, as long as the Falcons’ offense is healthy, their combo running attack and solid passing game makes them a duel threat. Atlanta won’t have 30 points but 23 to 24 is a real possibility.

However, I am weary of a straight over play here as well, hence the teaser to improve our NFL Betting Odds a little bit. It is still a -110 play for the 6-point teaser from 5Dimes.

If you’re looking at another sportsbook, make sure it’s one included in our Rating Guide to make sure you are making bets bet!
