Bettors are having trouble deciding whether to put the OVER or the UNDER in their NFL picks for Sunday night's game between the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Giants.

Jason's 2015 record as of Oct. 10: 17-9 ATS; 0-1 ML (-1.00 units); 10-14 Total

The San Francisco 49ers have one of the worst offenses in the NFL. Seems like an easy UNDER pick for Sunday night's matchup (8:30 p.m. ET, NBC) against the New York Giants, right? Well, the Niners also have one of the worst defenses in the league. They've split the totals right down the middle at 2-2 this year. What's a bettor to do?

It's a common question this week. There's a 43.5-point total on the NFL odds board at press time, and according to our consensus reports, the marketplace is divided 50-50 on which side to take. The only hint we might be getting from the sharps: The total was 43 at the open, and remains so at many locations. Maybe there's been bigger action on the OVER. We asked our roving gang of street urchins (aka Google) to check it out, and they seem to think so.

Whichever side we take, it's going to be for a very, very small bet. There isn't much of a profit margin to be had in this situation; the total is in the mid-40s, the market is split, and the Giants join San Francisco with the total at 2-2. In theory, we could put the OVER in our NFL picks as part of a combo bet with New York –7. That wasn't a terribly difficult ATS pick here at the home office. Hmmm.

Let's get some more data. Over at the weather desk, we still have clear skies over East Rutherford – that makes the UNDER a bit less likely. How about that MSR... I mean, MRSA outbreak that knocked TE Daniel Fells out for the season? The Giants are obviously concerned about Fells, who remains in hospital, but they don't seem too worried about the infection spreading through the clubhouse after it was given a vigorous scrubbing. There are league-wide procedures in place for this kind of thing, after what happened to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013.

Selvie Stick
There is one personnel update on the Niners that points toward the OVER. We're sad to report that LB Ahmad Brooks will not play Sunday following the death of his sister on Wednesday. Krsunthia Brooks passed away from lupus at the age of 40. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ahmad and the Brooks family.

The Giants defense looks like it'll be thin on Sunday, too. DE George Selvie and LB Jonathan Casillas were both held out of Thursday's practice with calf injuries; LB Devon Kennard (hamstring) is also uncertain to face the Niners. Let's go ahead with a tiny bet on the OVER, and may the prolate spheroid be with you.
