Two of this year’s top football betting candidates are having a wee spot of trouble. Okay, a ton of trouble if you’re the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who host the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday.

Our Week 6 NFL coverage continues with our Daily NFL Week 6 Betting Odds Report!

I hate it when a plan doesn’t come together. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers looked like strong follow candidates coming into the 2013 campaign, but they gave away the first two games, then they gave away QB Josh Freeman. The Bucs went into their Week 5 bye as football betting pariahs at 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS. Phooey.

The Philadelphia Eagles looked pretty promising, too, with new head coach Chip Kelly and his blur offense making a big splash against Washington in Week 1. But Kelly needs to come up with a blur defense; his Eagles are 2-3 SU and ATS, and they likely won’t have QB Michael Vick when they visit the Buccaneers this Sunday (1:00 p.m. ET, FOX). The Week 6 NFL betting lines have Philly as a slim 1-point road fave with about two-third of bettors favoring the Eagles.

 Greg the Bunny

Tampa Bay’s story starts and ends with coach Greg Schiano. All that great work he did in college at Rutgers (where he won multiple Coach of the Year honors in 2006) has gone completely out the window at the NFL level. Or so it would seem. It was his defensive genius that made Tampa Bay a solid NFL pick last year at 7-9 SU and 10-5-1 ATS, and with the addition of shutdown CB Darrelle Revis, the Buccaneers are ranked No. 3 in the league in defensive efficiency even in these dark times.

Schiano hasn’t had quite the same success with the Bucs offense. The departure of Freeman (now with the Minnesota Vikings) seems pre-arranged in retrospect; aside from the clash of personalities between the old-school coach and the ADHD quarterback, we’ve since learned that Schiano is particularly fond of Mike Glennon, Tampa Bay’s third-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft – and the team’s new starting QB.

Open Mike Night

Glennon’s got some skills. He backed up Russell Wilson at North Carolina State before Wilson transferred to Wisconsin in 2011, then started two seasons for the Wolfpack, earning the nod for 2011 Belk Bowl MVP in their win over the Louisville Cardinals. Glennon is 6-foot-7 with a strong arm, and if his mechanics develop, he could be a franchise quarterback someday.

That day has yet to arrive. Glennon’s accuracy and his footwork are substandard at this level; in his Week 4 start, he went 24-of-43 for 193 yards, one TD and two picks against the Arizona Cardinals, currently the No. 12-ranked defense in the league. Football Outsiders ranked Glennon’s performance No. 29 (minus-130 Total DYAR) out of the 31 QBs who played in Week 4. That was worse than No. 28 Matt Flynn (minus-113), who is no longer employed in the NFL.

Philly Spread

As for the Eagles, they’ve got the No. 5-ranked offense in the league according to efficiency, but the No. 29-ranked defense and special teams as well. Part of this can be explained away by the team’s conversion to the 3-4 scheme under new co-ordinator Bill Davis. But that Eagles secondary has been absolutely brutal thus far, and FS Pat Chung (shoulder) is expected to miss his second straight game.

Eagles fans are more concerned about Vick’s hamstring. Vick was limited during Wednesday’s practice, and it’s expected that Nick Foles will get the start this Sunday after finishing up strong in last week’s 36-21 victory over the struggling New York Giants (+1 at home). Tampa’s defense should have more success containing Foles and the Philly offense, but unless Glennon turns into Doug Williams overnight, it probably won’t be enough. Consider the Eagles on the spread for your sports picks.
