The Detroit Lions look to build on 2014 but a tough NFL schedule presents a challenge to those aspirations. Odds makers have chalked season win totals at 8. Will the Lions crack this modest number and contend for the playoffs?

Detroit Lions Building On 2014
The Detroit Lions look to build on a solid 2014 season, in which they finished with a stellar 11-5 SU mark and very nearly took the NFC North title, only for Green Bay Packers to wrestle it out of their gasp in the dying weeks of the regular season. However, they'll be forced to replicate their solid run of form without some notable stalwarts in the line up (Ndamukong Suh, springs to mind) and a rather tough NFL schedule.

Indeed, their schedule is quite brutal with tough stretches book-ending the 17-week season. They have the 15th toughest schedule overall with a 0.527 winning percentage, largely down to drawing the tough NFC West and getting a crossover with the AFC West. Last season, they had the 16th toughest NFL schedule but it boasted a subpar 0.492 winning percentage.

The upshot of which is that the Detroit Lions, who opened on 8.5 projected season win totals have already come down by half-a-point. Although the OVER 8 is still favored at -130 NFL odds at Bovada, the UNDER is trading on EVEN money. That's quite telling.

Last season, we previewed the Lions' NFL schedule and served up our NFL picks. By our game-by-game predictions we had the Lions going over their 8.5 season win total trading then, which was an NFL pick trading at -110. Let's see how we do this season with our 2015 game-by-game preview and NFL picks for the Lions.

Week 1: vs.  San Diego (road), Sunday, Sept 13 at 4:05 PM
On paper, this looks to be a tough matchup for the Detroit Lions on the road in week 1 NFL betting. With a retooled defense, thanks to Ndamukong Suh's departure to the greener pastures in Miami, the Lions' defense won't be as formidable. Or so they say. On the flipside, the question mark over Philip Rivers' future still persists. One wonders if he will still be a Charger come next season. Too many questions, not enough answers. We're going with the Lions though in this one just because the Chargers didn't really impress us last season, particularly against good teams.

NFL Picks: Win
Record 1-0

Week 2: vs.  Minnesota (road), Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1 PM
The Detroit Lions take on divisional rivals Minnesota Vikings in week 2 NFL betting. This is going to be a must-win game for both teams in the pursuit of the NFC North title. One has to concede that the Lions figure to have the edge behind a more experienced quarterback. The Vikings won't be pushovers, but the Lions should take it to second year quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

NFL Picks: Win
Record 2-0

Week 3: vs. Denver (home), Sunday, Sept 27 at 8:30 PM
Matthew Stafford doesn't have a good record against elite quarterbacks in big games. This is going to be a Primetime Football clash on Sunday Night. NFL bettors can count on Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos to get up for this one. Can the same be said of Matthew Stafford, even with home advantage?

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 2-1

Week 4: vs. Seattle (road), Monday, Oct 5 at 8:30 PM
Read above. Matthew Stafford vs. Russell Wilson? Plus which defense is better, the Lions or the Legion of Boom. Whichever way you slice it, we're spelling doom for the Lions at CenturyLink where the Seattle Seahawks are one of the toughest outfits to knock out.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 2-2

Week 5: vs. Arizona (home), Sunday Oct 11 at 4:05 PM
The Arizona Cardinals played above their heads last season and surprised many NFL bettors, particularly as they ran the quarterback carousel like no other team and still emerged 11-5 SU winners, very nearly clinching the NFC West title. It remains to be seen what the Cardinals will accomplish in 2015, but they should figure to be a tough team. This is a game that could go either way. On the strength of home advantage, we probably should be giving it to the Lions but we're feeling no joy about it. It's a short week after a brutal road trip to Seattle and the Caridnals have had recent success over Matthew Stafford and the Lions.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record: 2-3

Week 6: vs. Chicago (home), Sunday, Oct 18 at 1 PM
A revamped Chicago descends on Detroit in week 6 NFL betting. John Fox is a highly respected coach and, as such, there's a lot of hype surrounding the Chicago Bears. But what about Jay Cutler. Can Fox turn him into a viable quarterback? Hard to see that happening at this point in time. The Lions have to have the clear NFL betting edge in this matchup.

NFL Picks: Win
Record 3-3

Week 7: vs. Minnesota (home), Sunday, Oct 25 at 1 PM
The Vikings descend on the Lions in week 7 NFL betting. Last season, the Lions swept the series with the Vikings, winning 17-3 in Minnesota and 16-14 at home. It could be another heated battle, but the Lions should emerge winners here.

NFL Picks: Win
Record 4-3

Week 8: vs. Kansas City (LONDON) Sunday, Nov 1 at 9:30 AM
Last season, the Lions travelled to London to take on the Atlanta Falcons. This year they have the Kansas City Chiefs to look forward to, which should be one of the best matchups Wembley sees this season. This game could go either way as it's unfamiliar territory, a long trek over the pond and two teams that figure to be a contender this season.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 4-4

Week 9:  Bye

Week 10: vs. Green Bay (road), Sunday, Nov 15 at 1 PM
A date with the Green Bay Packers after a trip to the UK even with a week's rest on a bye is a tough ask, especially at the Lambeau where the Packers were unbeatable last season. This has LOSS written all over it, unless something otherworldly happens like aliens kidnapping Aaron Rodgers before kickoff.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 4-5

Week 11: vs. Oakland (home) Sunday, Nov 22 at 1 PM
The Oakland Raiders are a team in rebuild mode and, as such, present a winnable game for Matthew Stafford and the Lions. One figures with all the experience Matthew Stafford has, he can outshoot Derrek Carr and the Raiders. Plus it's a home game and the Lions will be glad to be back home after a brutal trip to Green Bay.

NFL Picks: Win
Recor 5-5

Week 12: vs. Philadelphia (home), Thursday, Nov 26 at 12:30 PM
Chip Kelly and the Philadelphia Eagles are a bit of an anomaly going into 2015. Kelly has been rather experimental and bold with some of his roster decisions, and it remains to be seen how they factor on the field. Then again, Kelly has led the Eagles to double-digit win seasons in the last two years and one can't ignore his track record of success with the players he has at his disposal. This is going to be a tough game, but a highly anticipated Thanksgiving showdown. On the offensive side of the ball, the Eagles can run away with this game.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record: 5-6

Week 13: vs. Green Bay (home), Thursday, Dec 6 at 8:25 PM
The Green Bay Packers again in less than a month. Yikes. That's just a lot of Aaron Rodgers for one month. The Lions did stifle Rodgers on his last visit to Detroit and carved out the 19-7 win. But with a retooled defense, Rodgers could have lots more room in the pocket to do as he pleases. And when the guy gets to do what he wants, things can get ugly.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 5-7

Week 14: vs. St. Louis (road), Sunday, Dec 13 at 1 PM
There's a lot of quiet optimism about the St. Louis Rams this season. They have Eagles' cast off Nick Foles calling the shots and several key additions that could make them a sleeper pick in the NFC West to contend. This could be tougher than most NFL bettors expect, particularly on the road.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 5-8

Week 15: vs. New Orleans (road), Monday, Dec 21 at 8:30 PM
The Lions take on the New Orleans Saints at the Dome in Monday Night Football betting, which is going to be another Primetime game that could see Matthew Stafford and the Lions choke under the pressure. Then again, if it's the same Saints that we saw last season the Lions could steamroll New Orleans into submission.

NFL Picks: Win
6-8

Week 16: vs. San Francisco (home), Sunday, Dec 27 at 1 PM
The San Francisco 49ers are another team that is in rebuild mode, so it's hard to tell what to expect of them in the 2015 season. Given that this is a home game and we don't know enough about the Niners yet, we probably should give this game to the Lions.

NFL Picks: Win
Record 7-8

Week 17: vs. Chicago (road), Sunday, Jan 3 at 1 PM
The Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears close the season in week 17 NFL betting. It's going to be a tough game for the Lions in the brutal Chicago weather and that could be a factor that sees them succumb to a loss. That said, the Bears were abysmal last season. How far can John Fox take them this year? Can he turnaround a team so completely?

NFL Picks: Win
Record 8-8

NFL Betting Verdict: As far as our NFL predictions go, we have the Lions going 8-8 SU this season, which would mean a push under the current projected 8 season win totals that are trading at Bovada. Obviously, the 8.5 projected season win total would have suited our NFL picks better. Alas, the line is now set to 8. If we're to make a prediction on that score, we'd recommend the OVER 8 at -130 give or take a few of the games mentioned above as close picks.
