The Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs were fortunate in their own ways in week one of the NFL season. How will the dynamics change for each team in week two, if at all?

Dallas Cowboys @ Kansas City Chiefs

Odds: Kansas City -2.5

The Cowboys can win because…

They are going up against an opponent that was not challenged at all in week one. If any result from week one was not genuinely indicative of how a team will perform over the remainder of the season, it was and is Kansas City’s 28-2 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are clearly the worst team in professional football. Jacksonville is such a mess as a team and as an organization that it’s hard to evaluate Kansas City based on a comfortable win over the Jags. The Chiefs certainly did what they had to do, and took care of business in convincing fashion, but a lot of teams – even some fairly mediocre ones – are going to have their way with Jacksonville over the coming weeks and months. The NFL odds makers know that the smart reaction to the Kansas City-Jacksonville result is to not view it as a barometer of where the Chiefs are or where they are going to be in a short time.

The other big reason to pick Dallas here is that the Cowboys received a great performance from their offensive line against the New York Giants’ defensive front this past Sunday. The Cowboys’ retooled line gave quarterback Tony Romo a lot of time in which to throw. A reduplicated performance this weekend should enable Romo to find holes in the middle layers of Kansas City’s defense. Given that the Chiefs are an unknown entity on offense, Dallas should be able to win if it can score at least 27 points.

The Chiefs can win because…

Their opponent won by only five points this past week despite gaining six turnovers. Dallas forced six New York Giant turnovers and yet was fortunate to escape with a one-possession victory. The Cowboys showed a measure of resilience, and they were obviously able to hold onto the ball better than their opponent, but an NFL team should be able to win much more decisively when it forces six turnovers. Dallas, 8-8 the past two seasons, has yet to really prove that it is ready to reach the next level and experience the kind of transformation that can get the franchise into the playoffs. Romo also suffered bruised ribs this past Sunday against the Giants. He was able to play, but he was no longer stepping into his throws after the injury. He lost a measure of velocity and became a diminished quarterback in terms of overall quality. Receiver Dez Bryant also got injured against the Giants, creating even more questions about this team’s ability to perform well enough on offense in this game. Handicappers who make their NFL picks know that if Kansas City does not commit turnovers, Dallas’ ability to win will be questioned and rightly so.

Outlook & NFL Football Betting Prediction:

The Cowboys were just not convincing in week one, and while Kansas City played a weak opponent, the Chiefs were crisper and more decisive. This should carry over into week two and lead to a win for Kansas City. Take the Chiefs with your sports picks.
