It was a mixed bag for sportsbooks and those placing sports picks alike this past week. Public teams Green Bay, Denver and New England all covered, helping all square action across the board.
Also, both squares and sharps were all over Cleveland to take down Baltimore with the +6.5 and much larger figure on teaser cards and the Browns ended up winning outright. However, the public was taken down hard with what appeared to be easy spread winners with favorites like Kansas City, Atlanta and the New York Giants. This ended up having a lot of bettors tossing parlay and teaser cards in the trash having losing tickets.
On the topic of teasers, they have really grown in popularity for football bettors because you can structure the odds in a more favorable position. Of course there is still risk, but it is a fun an exciting way to wager.
Football handicappers like myself are not just trying to have a little fun, but be right side of key numbers to build an edge. Last week New Orleans cost us a win on a four-teamer, but as I have been saying and doing, break these out into two or three-team teasers and your chances of winning increase, as I have actually been correct overall on 16 of 20 choices.
Here are my teaser picks for NFL Week 6 and consider Heritagesports.eu, who has some of the best NFL odds for teasers.
Minnesota +2.5 Teaser Odds
With Kansas City blowing a home game to the Chicago Bears to land at 1-4, the season is quickly going down the tubes. The loss of Jamaal Charles is devastating, which significantly weakens an already scuffling offense. Minnesota is rested off a bye week and should be able to take advantage of a Chiefs secondary which has not been good all season. Taking the Vikings from -3.5 favorites to +2.5 helps us move past key number and just needing a victory. Our case is further made by home favorites (on the standard spread), after beating the spread by 21 or more points total in their last three games, against opponent after going over the total by 21 or more points total in their last three games, are 15-2 ATS the last three years.
Pittsburgh +9 Teaser Odds
It was between this game and the Packers at +4 and while I like both and will use for NFL picks in other teasers, I will take the Steelers. What I like about Pittsburgh is that their defense is the kind that cause Arizona issues, being able to slow the run and blitz on third and long to bother Carson Palmer. Also, coach Mike Tomlin and his staff can now trust Mike Vick more as he showed he can still make big plays and still rely on the running game. With this teaser number, we get off the +3 on Pittsburgh, hop over the 7 and find a team which is 25-2 against a teaser line at home after gaining 6.5 or more yards a play in their previous game.
Miami +9 Teaser Odds
Maybe I will be in the minority, but with these betting odds, I like the value of Miami not only with this many points, but to win outright. All my research finds interim coach Dan Campbell is already having a positive effect by the changes he's made and the enthusiasm he's brought to the practice field. Now I'm the first to admit, what happens in practice does not always transfer to games, nevertheless, we are not talking about a Tennessee juggernaut. The Dolphins are going past the same numbers as the Steelers above and conference road teams when the line is +3 to -3, after being beaten by the spread by 28 or more points total in their last three games, are 33-10 ATS, winning by 4.6 PPG since 2006.
New England -1.5 Teaser Odds
It would sure be fun to be at New England's practices this and here all the talk about what players and coaches have to say about Indianapolis this week, knowing the "Deflategate" incident. Whether or not you believe this will be added fuel for the Patriots to want to pound the Colts really does not matter when reviewing this teaser figure. At this price, all we really need is New England victory and hope that Tom Brady does not get hurt which seems to be the only way the Pats would win by a single point. The Patriots are 28-2 against a teaser line in road games after two straight wins by 10 or more points.
