With New York and Washington stumbling out of the gate, Philadelphia can get the Chip Kelly era off to a good start with a victory. But they will have to discover fast answers on a short week.

Philadelphia’s Defense is Offensive

The Eagles defense has not done the job in the last six quarters. They may be forgiven for allowing 20 points to Washington in the second half in a division game. However, surrendering 33 points to San Diego at home begins to raise real questions on how they will stop teams.

"It's very disappointing to everyone on defense because we couldn't stop them when we had to," Eagles linebacker DeMeco Ryans said. "We couldn't get off the field on third down and ultimately that killed us.” This was certainly the case as San Diego was 10 for 15 on third down conversions.

The Philadelphia secondary is patchwork and it showed against Philip Rivers. The return of Bradley Fletcher from a concussion will help, yet not much defensive coordinator Bill Davis can do on a short week.

Coach Has To Be Better Too

Being a NFL head coach is really burdensome. All the preparation which is necessary for a game and covering all the details that can be the difference between winning and losing is of the utmost importance.

Coach Kelly could have used a time out on the Eagles final possession when Michael Vick was dinged and admitted so on Monday. His clock management was also called into question, leaving San Diego 1:51 to play after his team had tied the score at 30-all when he could have dripped the clock of more time on the scoring drive.

This is an undervalued aspect of coaching.

Weird Game for Andy Reid

Andy Reid has given Kansas City fans what they wanted, hope and possibly a competitive team.

Reid has hardly been with the Chiefs long enough to give all his Philadelphia gear to charity and going back to Philly so soon has to leave him raw with emotions. Though he has the street cred, Reid is still in the process of winning over his entire team to his thought process and it is hard to say if all the K.C. players are down with the coach this soon and give something extra for him to pull out a victory.

Conversely, several players reportedly tuned Reid out last year and those who are still remaining would be expected to show the old coach they can still play.

If this was past the midpoint of the season, both teams would be established in the course of their direction and everyone’s thoughts would be different. A very odd situation for sure.

Matchup Numbers

Philadelphia began as field goal favorite and had been lifted to -3.5 at home in the NFL odds. Several sports betting shops opened this contest at 49 and this figure has been pushed to 51.5. The Eagles have covered the last four meetings, winning three times.

 What to Watch For

The Kansas City offense is spry enough to consistently move the pigskin on the Eagles. Expect the Chiefs to probe the perimeter of the Philly defense, since in both their games, they have endured problems getting tacklers out past the offensive tackles and been picked off by pulling linemen. Running back Jamaal Charles could have a monster night.

Alex Smith has become a smart game manager and moves the ball down field without making mistakes. He is still learning to work with his wide receivers, which is what has caused the offense to bog down.

The Chiefs defense will have their hands full with the Eagles speedy offense and its big play threats. What they will need to do is keep Vick in the pocket and make him find secondary receivers, which is not his strength. Vick has been nicked in each game already and K.C. would be wise to keep hitting him, legally of course.

Smith was sacked four times against Dallas, making this Philadelphia’s best chance to stall Chiefs drives with pressure up the A-gaps. If the Eagles can keep K.C. behind the chains, they improve their chances on defense.

On offense, keep Vick upright, let him find his fleet receivers and big plays are bound to occur. LeShon McCoy is the one player who can break the Chiefs tendencies and make him a focal point, opening the potential for others.

Final Outcome

While Philadelphia wants the quick bounce back effort, a leaky defense against a team which isn’t making mistakes and plays intelligent defense is too hard to pass up. Take the Chiefs for your NFL picks.
