Sportsbook lists the Chargers as a huge 10.5 point betting favorite and the total for the game is 44.5. The reason why San Diego is such a large favorite is that the Chiefs have nothing to gain except to play spoiler. They have the number 5 spot locked up and with Alex Smith’s past history of injuries; I doubt that head coach Andy Reid will allow Smith much time on the field.
Fighting For Their Playoff Lives
On the other side of the spectrum, this is a must win situation for Phillip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers. They need a lot of luck as Baltimore and Miami both own the tie-breaker over San Diego for the 6th and final wild card spot. All the Chargers can do is win against the Chiefs. Luckily for them, they’re at home and dealing with a team that has nothing to gain.
Concentrate On the Game
This is the type of game where San Diego can’t be scoreboard watching about games that they can’t control. They just need to take care of business. This shouldn’t be a problem the way that quarterback Phillip Rivers has been playing along with his supporting cast.
San Diego is in a good spot here. They have one of the top passing attacks in the league and a good rushing game. The only thing that they do poorly is defend against the pass.
Will Jamaal Charles Sit Or Play?
This is the deciding factor in this game as Charles has been the best running back in the league this season and has been on fire in his last 5 games. In these handful of games, Charles has averaged 132 yards per game and has scored 11 touchdowns.
If Andy Reid has any personal vendettas against San Diego, here is his chance to stick it to the Bolts. However, Reid is a level-headed coach and you won’t see that here. San Diego should have their way and their fate will rest upon the other games that they can’t control.
It’s do or die for the Chargers and I expect Phillip Rivers to air it out to players like Keenan Allen and Antonio Gates. Allen has been a favorite target of Rivers lately, catching 5 touchdown passes in the last 3 weeks. Rivers also has 1000 yard rusher, Ryan Matthews, and all-purpose back, Danny Woodhead, at his disposal. The Chargers will look to win this game by any means necessary.
The Chargers have said that they won’t be scoreboard watching. If they were eliminated early, it could affect the outcome of this game. Expect Rivers to come out gunslinging; he’s a gamer. Chargers cover against the disinterested Chiefs for our NFL pick.
