For their Week 7 Sunday matchup, Mark Trestman’s Chicago Bears head east to FedEx Field to square off against the Washington Redskins.

The Chicago Bears survived a scoreless fourth quarter in last Thursday’s 27-21 victory over the New York Giants, while falling short on NFL betting boards as 9.5-point home ‘chalk.’

Bears hold on at home

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler tossed two touchdowns to wide out Brandon Marshall as part of last week’s win, while finishing with 262 passing yards. Marshall notched a season-high nine catches, while Cutler’s offensive line gave up no sacks.

Chicago’s Matt Forte rushed for 67 yards on 19 carries, helping his side move the ball for 26 first downs in its 33 minutes of possession. The Bears committed no turnovers, while placekicker Robbie Gould went 2-for-2 in field goals – connecting from 40 and 52 yards.

Bears cornerback Tim Jennings grabbed two of his side’s three interceptions, returning one of them for an early touchdown. The battle’s combined 48 points slipped ‘Over’ the ‘total’ of 46.5, with both foes uniting for nine penalties (82 yards).

Redskins fall in “Big D”

Washington returned from its bye week with last Sunday’s 31-16 defeat as a 5.5-point road dog against the Dallas Cowboys. The Redskins failed to notch a touchdown in all three of their red zone trips, while outgaining Dallas in total yards, 433-213.

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III connected 19-of-39 passes, with favorite target Pierre Garcon logging six catches. Washington’s Alfred Morris equaled his season-high in carries, taking the ball 16 times for 81 yards.

The Redskins allowed an 86-yard punt return from Dallas’ Dwayne Harris, while flagged for a sizable 12 penalties (104 yards). ‘Under’ backers collected after sweating the final nine minutes, with the duel’s 47 points dipping below the ‘total’ of 52.

Back the ‘Under’ in Washington

Chicago opened as a 1.5-point road favorite, while early wagers on Washington shifted the matchup’s NFL odds to a "pick'em". The ‘total’ was first set at 48.5, with initial ‘Over’ betting driving the number north to 50.5.

I am going against the ‘steam,’ adding an ‘Under’ ticket here to my week’s card of sports picks.

Chicago has had its share of octane in road spots, but has come away with two of its three lowest overall scoring efforts in its last pair of contests. The Bears also equaled their season-low of points allowed in last Thursday’s affair, with a few days of extra rest allowing the defense to be even sharper here.

Washington has been held to 20 PPG in its last four weeks of action, while notching touchdowns in just two of its last eight red zone visits. The ‘Under’ is 6-2 in the Redskins’ last eight home spots, while going 3-1 in the last four meetings between these clubs.

Both squads have subpar numbers in third down situations, converting a combined 52-of-141 (36.9 percent). Look for each side to have its share of lengthy drives, grinding the clock as ‘Under’ backers collect with their NFL picks.
