The Redskins haven't been able to string together consecutive wins yet this season, they get the Jets in Week 6. How are the NFL odds shaping up, and who are we backing to cover ATS?
The Jets are off to a nice 3-1 start and will be well-rested for Week 6's home game after their bye week. They're getting a lot of love from linesmakers, as the NFL odds board shows New York favored by anywhere from six to seven points.
If you're more interested in making a play on the total, the O/U is currently listed all the way down at 40.5 points, one of the lowest numbers you'll see this week.
New York Jets
All in all, the Jets have enjoyed a perfectly fine start to their season. They've won three of their first four games, beating Cleveland, Indianapolis and Miami, with the one loss coming at home to Philadelphia.
Armed with a league-best defense that's allowed only 13.8 points per game, New York hasn't skipped a beat since Rex Ryan left town and actually have played better football on both sides of the ball. Along with that stellar defense, led by shutdown corner Darrelle Revis, the Jets are getting solid quarterback efforts from Ryan Fitzpatrick and they've been running the ball very well too, thanks in large part to Chris Ivory, who's averaging 104.7 rushing yards a game so far this season.
Following a comfortable 27-14 win over Miami in London in Week 4, New York got the week off in Week 5, so they should be raring to go this weekend.
The Redskins have gone 2-3 through five games, with wins over St. Louis and Philadelphia and losses to Miami, Atlanta and the New York Giants. This past weekend, they lost a heartbreaker on the road against the Falcons in a game they could easily won outright.
Pinned as big-time underdogs coming in, Washington fought valiantly against Atlanta despite being shorthanded and missing two of their top targets in the passing game in DeSean Jackson and Jordan Reed. Kirk Cousins didn't have his most productive game but made big plays when it counted, especially down the stretch in leading Washington to a game-tying field goal as time expired. Unfortunately, he did make the biggest mistake at the worst possible time, getting picked off and watching on helplessly as it was returned for the game-winning score.
We'll have to keep checking on the injury reprots to see if Jackson and/or Reed make any progress and are getting closer to returning, as that would have a big effect on the odds and our confidence levels with backing Washington.
Though it's tempting to back the rested Jets at home, we're been pretty impressed with the fight the Redskins have shown so far this season. They've been competitive each and every week, and that's a trend that we see continuing in Week 6.
Washington's defense has shown up over the last couple of weeks, as they held Philadelphia to 20 points and then allowed 25 (in overtime) on the road against one of the most potent offenses in the league versus Atlanta. That bodes well for this trip to face off against the Jets, who don't have the most fearsome offense out there. Fitzpatrick and company have been solid, but they're not world beaters either.
It also looks like the Redskins could get both Jackson and Reed back (be sure to track the injury updates throughout the week -- they're both currently questionable), which would be a big boost to their chances of putting points on the board this Sunday. Either way, we've seen Washington battle hard while being shorthanded and like their prospects of doing just that in Week 6; we'll therefore be backing the Redskins as significant underdogs.
