The marquee matchup of the weekend is the Seahawks playing host to their divisional rival, the 49ers. The NFL odds for this game is in favor of Seattle at -3, but for this piece, I have chosen to focus my energy on the total, which is settling around 44 with 24 hours to go before kickoff.
These two teams have gotten very familiar with one another over the years, and now that both are very good, it has been intensified. Their last meeting the Seahawks blasted San Francisco in Seattle in one of the final weeks of the season. The Hawks scored over 40 points and the total went well over, and I think a similar amount of points scored could be in store for this game.
A lot of people are guessing that this game will be lower scoring, but I have a different approach. Three out of the last five times these two teams have met, the total has gone over, and for Seattle, and the over is normally the play at home. The ‘Over’ has cashed in 15 of the last 22 home games in Seattle, and for the Niners, four of their last five road games have gone over as well.
Both teams will want to run the ball in this game, however I have a feeling that will be a waste of effort. Marshawn Lynch did not look good last week against the Panthers, so do you really think he will be able to control the rock against one of the best rushing defenses in the NFL?
On the other side, Frank Gore will likely have some issues against the Hawks as well. Both of these teams might be forced to throw the ball a lot against one another, because it may be the only way both teams can move the ball against one another. If that is indeed the case, a lot of points could be put up in this one, making 44 points slightly undervalued. Colin Kaepernick threw the ball over 35 times in their last meeting with one another, and against the Packers, the 49ers put the ball in the air a lot as well. Russell Wilson had four touchdown passes as well in their last game against the 49ers, so a similar game plan may be on the way.
The Sharp Pick
The Hawks are also dealing with a lot of injuries that could affect the score in this game. Brandon Browner is doubtful after not playing in Week 1 with a hamstring injury. His absence can only help the Niners’ passing game. Plus, Chris Clemons is listed as questionable with a knee injury, and if he can’t go, that will really hurt the pass rush. The Hawks get Cliff Avril back this week, but either way, injuries on defense may make this an upset and a high scoring game. All in all, I’m taking the ‘Over’ and adding it to my NFL picks. The storm is too good for a higher scoring affair.
My Pick: ‘Over’ 44 at Bet 365
