Game Overview

The Giants are 2-8 straight-up on the year with a 4-6 record against the spread following last Sunday’s 12-9 upset against Kansas City in overtime as 10-point home underdogs. The total stayed well UNDER the closing 44.5-point line and it has stayed UNDER in three of their last five games. New York has gone 3-2 ATS on the road this season with the total going OVER in three of the five games.

New York’s problems have been across the board with an offense that is 30th in the NFL in scoring with 16.2 points a game trying to keep pace with a defense that is 24th in points allowed (24.7). Give credit to this side of the ball for holding the Chiefs to just three field goals, but that will probably not be the case against Washington on Thursday night. Eli Manning will have to play another mistake-free game while trying to find a way to move the ball down the field through the air with a heavily depleted receiving corps.

Washington blew a 15-point fourth-quarter lead in an eventual 34-31 overtime loss to New Orleans last Sunday to fall to 4-6 SU on the year. It still covered as a 9.5-point road underdog to improve to 4-6 ATS as well. The total went OVER 52.5 points against the Saints and it has gone OVER in six of the Redskins last seven games. They are 1-4 ATS in five previous home games this season and the total has gone OVER in their last three home games.

The Redskins have been their own worst enemy in the midst of four losses in their last five games. They still have Kirk Cousins leading an offense that is seventh in the league in passing while putting up an average of 23.8 points per game, but this unit has turned the ball over 15 times in 10 games including 10 lost fumbles. Washington’s defense deserves the bulk of the blame for the mid-season slide. This side of the ball is 24th in the NFL in yards allowed and 31st in scoring with a points-allowed average of 26.6.

Betting Trends
  •  The Giants are 1-5 SU in their last six games played on the road as part of a SU record of 2-9 overall their last 11 games. The total has gone OVER in four of their last six road games.
  •  The Redskins have failed to cover in six of their last seven home games while going 2-5 SU. The total has gone OVER in 11 of their last 15 games played at FedEx Field.
  •  Head-to-head in this bitter division rivalry, New York has won six of the last eight meetings both SU and ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in eight of the last 11 games between the two NFC East foes.

Free Game Prediction

Despite each team’s disappointing record this season, Thursday night’s game should actually be a pretty good contest between two division opponents that know each other extremely well. I like the Giants’ chances to keep things close deep into the fourth quarter in what could be a lower scoring contest then SBR Odds’ total line might suggest. The lean is still towards the Redskins SU, but the top NFL pick is New York covering with the points.
