How will the 49ers respond now that they've out of playoff contention? They'll welcome a San Diego team that still has plenty to play for, and we believe the Chargers are the right play with our NFL picks for this rare Saturday matchup.

Odds Overview
In terms of the spread, NFL Odds have the 49ers favored by either 2.5 or 3 points. This is when it's crucial to employ multiple books in your handicapping endeavors, as you're able to get the best possible number and get the most of all of your selections.

A low total of 41.5 has been put on the board for this rare Saturday game. Both teams are in the top 11 in scoring defense, which would explain a low number.

San Francisco 49ers
It wasn't that long ago the 49ers were 7-4 and in a great spot to make the postseason. They had just won their third straight game and were full of confidence going into Week 13.

Then San Francisco ran into Seattle. The 49ers have now dropped three straight, with two of the losses coming to their division rivals. They fell 19-3 at home and 17-7 on the road, with a bad loss to Oakland sandwiched inbetween. In simple terms, it's been a disastrous few weeks for San Francisco.

This past weekend, the 49ers again failed to get anything going offensively. They were held to 245 total yards by the Seahawks, and still fell way short despite not turning the ball over once to Seattle's pesky and opportunistic defense. Colin Kaepernick was 11-of-19 for 141 yards and was sacked six times - he ended up with a brutal QBR of 16.9. Remember when everyone was touting Kaep as the next great quarterback? Yikes.

Because of the terrible run, the 49ers are now completely out of the running for a spot in the postseason. And, more pertinent to our industry, they're going to be mighty hard to trust now that all of their playoff hopes have vanished and they have little more to play for.

San Diego Chargers
What a ride it's been for the Chargers. They went on a five-game winning streak from Week 2 through 6, but then lost three straight ahead of their Week 10 bye. They followed that up with three consecutive wins, but have now dropped two in a row coming into Saturday's road game.

Quite a few pieces will have to align for San Diego to reach the playoffs, but the only thing in their control is finishing off the season strong. They need to win their last two games, it's as simple as that.

Last weekend the Chargers lost 22-10 at home to the Broncos. Philip Rivers had 232 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, while the run game was stuffed for 56 yards on 20 carries - it was a very forgettable day at the office for San Diego's offense. Tight end Antonio Gates, who had 54 receiving yards and the team's only touchdown, was one of the few bright spots.

Will the Chargers lay down and die in the remaining two games? Or will they respond in a positive manner and pick up a huge road victory over the 49ers?

NFL Pick
When making our NFL picks, it's difficult to have much faith in the 49ers at this juncture.

It looks like they've all but quiet on coach Jim Harbaugh, as it's been reported time and time again that he's on his way out after the season ends. That's not exactly the vote of confidence you'd like to see in the person leading your program. San Francisco has lost its swagger recently, losing three in a row.

San Diego has plenty of motivation right now and we believe this to be a good bounce-back spot after two straight losses to two of the best teams in the NFL in New England and Denver. It's not like the Chargers have been impressing lately, but they appear to be in better spirits than the 49ers and appear to hold great NFL betting value in Week 16.
