Our NFL handicapper discusses a few teams that could be ripe for hedging opportunities if a player is on the right side of the futures market.

Now that the NFL season is underway, we can start looking at the possibility of getting into positions to hedge any futures bets you may have as trends start to develop. One reason to start hedging is that something has gone your way already and you want to lock in a profit. Another reason would be an injury to a major starter which is sure to affect the results of the rest of the season.

Many of you could have season team win totals that are at risk or on their way to winning. Let’s focus on a few teams that have had a rough start into the season, and what you can do to minimize risk or ensure a profit while betting on the NFL Odds.

Cleveland Browns
Cleveland had the lowest season win total on the board to start the season at 4.5 at Bovada. Now that their starting quarterback is out for the season, anyone with the Under on this prop bet has to be feeling pretty good. Their QB situation is desperate, and they would be well served to try and get the best draft pick they can get. If you have the Under for this prop bet, look for spots to hedge with Cleveland at home against a bad passing team as a free pass to take a plus money line wager on the Browns. They’ll be heavy dogs for the rest of the season.

Indianapolis Colts
The Colts have the highest season win total prop of the teams who went 0-2 in Week 2. At this point, I’ve seen enough to know that this is not going to be a winner for Over bettors. If you are in the situation where you have placed money on the Colts to break that mark, consider hedging by wagering against the Colts later in the season when they are favorites and giving up points, although that might not happen as the last six games on their schedule are brutal. The Colts could easily go 5-11 this year.

Washington Redskins
The Redskins, at 1-2 after a 2 point win over the New York Giants in Week 3, have a tough schedule ahead of them, and could only clear their season's prop bet of 7.5 by dominating their division the rest of the year. If you have bet the Under for the season win, I’d feel confident, but you do have the option to hedge on the money line if the Redskins are huge underdogs in their non-division schedule.

Just remember, hedging is a way to lock in profits or to reduce losses. If not done right, a player can lose both wagers and be worse off. Do the math carefully before placing a hedge bet.
