San Diego Chargers vs Oakland Raiders (-3) 4:25 EST

Each week in this spot I isolate an NFL underdog who has statistical, situational, and/or technical backing that implies there is a strong opportunity for them to win the game outright. Such is the case today, when the 2-2 SU ATS Chargers, following back to back defeats, travel to Oakland to face a Raiders team, who is 3-1 SU ATS for the year following 2 consecutive victories. As you will soon learn, it will be no surprise to you when the Chargers win this game outright.

In the outset of the season, there was a lot of love for the Oakland Raiders, who had gone from 3-13 SU in 2014 to 7-9 SU in 2015.  Yet, a rigorous road schedule with 3 trips to the Eastern Time zone in their first 4 games meant there would be plenty of challenges for the silver and black. Last week, they cemented consecutive east coast victories with a 28-27 unlikely comeback win at Baltimore in a contest where they were outpassed and outrushed (130-62) by a combined total of 412-261. IT WAS THE FOURTH CONSECUTIVE WEEK IN WHICH THEY HAVE BEEN OUTGAINED. A major problem is a defense which is allowing an NFL-high 460 yards, with a defensive running yard allowance of 135/5.1. Now, they return home following those phony victories to face a hungry San Diego team, who is searching to double avenge the second of three divisional opponents after going oh-fer in their rivalry games last year.

While Oakland has been recording unlikely victories, San Diego has been playing giveaway. In the last two weeks, they virtually gifted games to Indy and New Orleans. Last week, the Chargers led the Saints by 13 in the fourth quarter, only to commit two costly turnovers. As a result, they have now suffered 3 late losses by margins of 1, 4, and 6 points in OT. While the Chargers’ offense is averaging 30 PPG, it is the improved rushing defense allowing just 82/3.6 that makes them more competitive this season.

Our final advantage comes with a litany of technical edges. The Chargers are a long term 19-7 ATS at this series site, including 10-0 ATS if the Raiders are off a win. San Diego is on a run of 13-3 ATS as division road dog. In addition, the dog is 13-1 ATS in this divisional series.  The road team has covered 13/16 road games when the Chargers are involved, while the road team has also covered 10 consecutive times when the Oakland Raiders have taken the field. No surprise to this bureau that the Chargers win this one outright.  I invite you to put the NFL ODDS in your favor and join me in  my NFL PICK on the San Diego Chargers this afternoon.
