Swinger’s Overall 2016 NFL Record: 13-15 (after Week 6)

Last week was a sorry state of affairs. After going an abysmal 0-3 ATS in my NFL picks I am determined to right this sinking ship. The Carolina Panthers was a chalky play to be sure and they proved yet again that it’s not hip to be square, even if laying points on the road is the exception rather than your rule. Yes, the Cats came out flat as a board and tried desperately to reverse the course of the game in the second half but ultimately fell 41-38 to New Orleans.

My other two plays were equally as disastrous as the total in the Chiefs/Raiders game combined for a miserable 36 points, as the prolific Oakland offense was shut down by the 17th ranked Chiefs’ defense. Finally, The Bills looked like the 2013 Broncos in their 45-16 thrashing of the 49’ers. Getting eight points on the road with Kaepernick proved to be fool’s gold, starring Yours Truly as the fool.

Let’s check out this week’s slate and get on track. I almost said, get back on track, but that would presume I was ever on track and that is clearly not the case. So with a 13-15 overall record, we can only trust that my prodigious powers of prognostication will return before it’s too late. Let’s review what the NFL oddsmakers are hanging this week and get well – soon!

Saints (2-3 SU, 3-2 ATS) vs. Chiefs (3-2 SU, 2-3 ATS) Prediction

Drew Brees is playing like vintage Drew Brees. He outgunned Cam Newton last week in a 41-38 shootout with four touchdown strikes and 465 passing yards. Wow! The Saints will travel to KC and give the Chiefs much more to think about than the Raiders did last week. This is a team that is short on defense but long on offense.

Kansas City is solid defensively but no longer stellar. Drew Brees is 6-1 ATS as an underdog of 6 ½ or more as a member of the Saints and this one looks like a game New Orleans team could win, never mind cover. Give me the road dog here and buy the hook to seven if you must.

Raiders (4-2 O/U) vs. Jaguars (3-2 O/U) (Total)

Yes, I am going to drink from the poisoned well yet again. I played over the posted total in the Chiefs/Raiders game last week and was burned but this week it’s all shiny and new. Despite Oakland’s impotent offensive performance last week, they will rebound against Jacksonville because the weather will be better and the Jags have a suspect secondary.

Similarly, I expect the Jaguars to do damage against a Raiders’ defense that allows over 27 PPG and will allow Blake Bortles time in the pocket. Bortles is somewhat enigmatic but when he gets time to scan the field his arm does the rest. He will get time this week and points will result. Get high ladies and gents.

Seahawks (4-1 SU, 2-3 ATS) vs. Cardinals (3-3 SU, 3-3 ATS)

I ask you, who have the Cardinals beaten? Well, let me tell you. They beat up the middling-at-best Bucs in the desert and won their last two contests over a hapless 49’ers crew followed by a rudderless Jets squad. On the flip side, they lost as nine-point home chalk to the Brady-less Patriots in their opening week and were whacked around by the upstart Bills 33-18 as 5 ½ point road chalk, then stunned at home by the LA Rams in their own playpen and as 10-point home favorites, no less.

Now they meet a fierce Seattle defense that takes no prisoners and contained the high-flying Falcons to 24 points last week. I‘m not sure the small head start we are getting across the board will mean much but we’ll take it anyway just in case this one is close – which of course it won’t.

The Woodman’s Corner (3-3 ATS)

Unlike someone else I know, the Woodman has recovered from his early season blues and evened his record at 3-3 with the underdog Atlanta Falcons last week. This week he turns his attention to another big dog in the Cleveland Browns, as they travel to the Queen City and lock horns with their divisional and intrastate rivals, the Cincinnati Bengals. The Browns make the Dawg Pound proud this week, so sayeth the Woodman.
