Our NHL betting consultant shares his two best totals selections on Saturday’s huge card. Join us in reading his insightful analysis pertaining to the totals in the games between the Islanders/Capitals and Blue Jackets/Canadiens.
New York Islanders vs. Washington Capitals 12:35 PM ET
According to the NHL betting odds at Bodog, the posted total in this contest is 5.5. These Metropolitan Division rivals have met three times this season, and two of the three went over the total.
The New York Islanders have seen each of their previous five games on the road stay under the total. The Washington Capitals have seen eight of their previous twelve go under the number. This game will feature two of the more underrated goaltenders in the Eastern Conference, Jaroslav Halak of the Islanders, and Braden Holtby of the Capitals. Each of those goalies are enjoying stellar seasons to this point.
NHL Totals System
The New York Islanders have won six of their previous eight games. Today will also be the Islanders eighth game in the last fourteen days. Those two factors fit a very successful betting system on the total in recent years, and I’m going to use that important handicapping tool when making my NHL picks on Saturday.
Any road team (Islanders) with a total of 5.5, coming off winning six or seven of their previous eight games, and this will be their eighth game or more in the last fourteen days, has seen 44 of those 57-games (77.2%) stay under the total during the past five seasons.
NHL Pick: Play on the Islanders and Capitals to go under the total of 5.5 at Bodog
Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Montreal Canadiens 7:05 PM ET
According to the NHL betting odds at 5Dimes, the total in this contest is 5.0. These teams have met once this season with Montreal winning by a score of 3-2, and that contest pushed the total of 5.0. Last season saw both encounters between these clubs stay under the total.
McElhinney has been Solid for the Jackets
The Columbus Blue Jackets have seen six of their previous eight games on the road go under the total. Curtis McElhinney will in all likelihood get the start in goal tonight for Columbus. McElhinney has posted a stellar 2.00 GAA in his previous six starts, and has an impressive .930 save percentage during the past four.
Price having a MVP Type Season
The Montreal Canadiens Carey Price has been the unquestioned best goaltender in the Eastern Conference this season. During his last twenty-three starts Price has been superb, posting a 1.42 GAA, and compiling a terrific .959 save percentage. Price has seen just 20.8% of his last twenty-four starts go over the total. The Canadiens have suffered through some goal scoring woes of late. Montreal has scored two goals or less in nine of their last twelve games, despite averaging 33.7 shots on net per contest during that time which is why we're taking the under as our NHL pick.
NHL Pick: Columbus and Montreal to go under the total of 5.0 at 5Dimes.
