The undefeated Minnesota Vikings welcome the New York Giants to TCF Bank Stadium on Monday Night Football. Let’s review the NFL odds and figure out whether this will be a defensive battle or a high-octane shootout.

N.Y. Giants vs Minnesota Vikings

This is one of three games I circled as one of my Week 4 NFL picks. In my mind, this appears to be a mismatch and though the squares will be inclined to jump all over the home chalk, I can’t say I blame them. But this article is not about who wins or loses but where this total will ultimately reside. After reviewing the NFL betting odds I couldn’t help but notice that the total (or over/under for all you novices) seems more than a wee bit high for a defense like Minnesota’s that has been absolutely pulverizing the opposition. And we’re not talking about weak offenses either as the Vikings have held Green Bay and Carolina to an average of 12 points over the last two weeks. That my friends is no mirage and to think that Eli Manning and Company will suddenly crack the code that is the Minnesota pass rush is wishful thinking, to say the least.

In addition, the Vikings have an offense that is being managed, as opposed to sparked, by Sam Bradford who has done an admirable job after being handed the keys to a brand new offense without the benefit of learning the system in the offseason. He has reminded me more of Alex Smith, a game manager, than Aaron Rodgers, a game changer. But that’s okay because even though the Vikings rank 28th in passing, 20th in points scored and dead last in rushing, I feel even more comfortable going under this posted total.

The only reservation I have is that Manning may continue to toss Hail Mary’s when he realizes his running game will go nowhere against the Vikings’ wide loads in the trenches. When he does that, one of two things will happen. Either he gets lucky with a long distance strike down the sidelines or he gets picked off, putting Minnesota in excellent field position. Both scenarios dictate that there will be points on the board resulting from those decisions. But I’m not going to stress about what could happen in a worst-case scenario, I am going to focus on what will most likely happen. That is the Vikings contain the Giants, lots of punts on both sides, and the home team coming away victorious in a low-scoring affair.
