Let's preview the opening NFL betting odds for the New York Jets vs. Atlanta Falcons Monday Night Football Game. This will help us better guage how we will make our NFL picks later on.

NFL Picks: Jets vs. Falcons opening odds

Monday Night Football should be at the very least, an interesting game for wagering. The Falcons host the Jets to finalize Week 5 of the season. The NFL Odds for this one favor the Falcons anywhere from -8 ½ to -9 ½ in the early week odds, so who should we pick to cover in this primetime matchup?

Down, but not out

The Falcons have started the season 1-3 SU, and while it isn’t quite time to hit the panic button yet in Atlanta, if they lose or even have a bad game against the Jets this Monday evening, things could start to unravel in the ATL. The Saints currently have a three game lead in the division over Atlanta, and Drew Brees is showing no signs of slowing down.

Even the Jets have a better record than the Falcons, but even though they are coming into this game with a better record, the Jets find themselves as +9 underdogs for our NFL picks. If New York’s defense can come to play in primetime, they have an excellent chance of covering against the Falcons. Atlanta’s defense is giving up a ton of points, and even Geno Smith might be able to go on the road and put up points against this defense.

The Falcons’ offense has also been a little shaky recently, even at home. Atlanta only scored 10 first half points against the Pats this past week, and without the steady running of Steven Jackson, this team has some balance issues. This is exactly the kind of thing that Rex Ryan and his defensive staff will be looking to exploit this week. With Roddy White healing and still not himself, the Jets will be able to double-team Julio Jones, and try to stay in the game by running the ball and not turning it over.

Cornerback Asante Samuel had to sit out Sunday’s loss to the Patriots for Atlanta, and his status for Monday night is still likely in question. With little pass rush already, quarterbacks have had ample time to throw on the Falcons this season. Through four games Atlanta is giving up over 300 yards passing through the air per game. With Smith’s mobility, it would surprise me if he got sacked in this one.

Although they are good at stopping the run, the Falcons will have their hands full with Bilal Powell in this one. Powell had his second straight week of racking up over 100 all-purpose yards this past week against Tennesee, and that was with the Jets getting crushed for a majority of the game. This week against the Falcons, Powell should get plenty of touches, as the Jets will try and control the clock to keep Ryan off the field.

If they are capable of doing that, their defense has enough on it to hold down the Falcons. The Jets currently rank in the top ten against both the pass and the run through four games, however besides their game against the Patriots (where they played well) they haven’t played many great teams so far through four games.
