The 2016 NFL preseason is upon us and we have opinions on a select few matchups that will give our bankroll a head start until the games count in the standings. Let’s review these NFL picks and start cashing right away!

The drought is over and Week 1 of the NFL preseason feels like an oasis in a barren sports gambling landscape. Of course, there is baseball but let’s face it, the Boys of Summer have nothing on the gods of the grid iron and American football is back in our living rooms.

But before we get too giddy, let’s not allow our exuberance to take the place of good commonsense. Preseason contests are dicey propositions as many of the football players today will be punching a clock somewhere, within a month from now. Are you going to bet a bundle that tomorrow’s Terry from accounting will have the skills to catch a down-and-out at the pro level, turning it into a long gainer or even a touchdown? Consider me skeptical but there are reasons why preseason betting if done right, can be profitable as long as you tread lightly.

Let’s review the NFL odds, do a little homework and consider the coaches’ motivations which could land us on the sharp side of our NFL picks. No time like the present – let’s cash!

Thursday, August 11th – Redskins vs. Falcons
You probably won’t see much of Kirk Cousins or Matt Ryan but the backups in this game have their fair share of NFL experience. Colt McCoy and Matt Schaub should see plenty of action and though they may not be your idea of top-flight quarterbacks they should be able to call upon their experience to shred backup defensive secondaries. Let’s watch the scoreboard light up enough to go over this relatively low total.

Friday, August 12th – Vikings vs. Bengals
Minnesota head coach Mike Zimmer puts a great deal of emphasis on the preseason as evidenced by his 8-1 record over the past two years. He is also going back to the Queen City where he spent six seasons as the Bengals’ defensive coordinator. Zimmer still has family and friends in the area and will be hosting a barbecue at his northern Kentucky ranch while his team prepares for their preseason opener.

Though I am not big on intangibles and perceived emotional advantages in the regular season, I do believe those factors play a far greater role in the preseason. Starters and second-stringers can get a bit more game time than the “bubble” players, particularly from a coach who wants to make a statement. Let’s grab the field goal head start which we probably won’t even need.

Saturday, August 13th - Cowboys vs. Rams
It’s a new era for a franchise that hasn’t had a winning season since 2003 and a completely new venue. What’s old is new again as the St. Louis Rams are back in the same area code that they called home back in 1994. Yes, Los Angeles has their team back and even the name fits better as many of us never got used to the Rams’ nickname being affiliated with any other city than LA.

Now that the history is out of the way, we should note that this preseason contest has greater import than the average meaningless exhibition contest. Factor in too that head coach Jeff Fisher went 0-4 last in the preseason last year and his short leash is more akin to a choke collar this season. Since the merger in 1970, only one coach besides Jeff Fisher has kept his job after starting his reign with four straight losing seasons. Expectations are sky high with a brand new fan base, a newly refurbished stadium and the No. 1 pick in the draft, quarterback Jared Goff.

It appears I’m not the only one digging LA’s chances as the line has spiked from 3 to 4 and I don’t want to sit on my hands any longer as the line continues to climb. Lay the lumber and bet the Rams.
