Week 3 of the new NFL season offers up quite a few interesting matchups that should provide some solid clues as to which direction all 32 teams are headed in over the course of the 16-game schedule. I have zeroed in on a pair of division showdowns that offer the best value in the current NFL Odds.

Game 1: New York Giants at Philadelphia EaglesPointspread: Philadelphia -6Total Line: 43

New York came into the new season as a slight favorite to win the NFC East on most books’ futures odds, but an unexpected 0-2 start both straight-up and against the spread has put a major damper on those lofty expectations. The main problem lies in an offense that has scored a total of 13 points in losses Dallas and Detroit. Eli Manning has just one touchdown throw against two interceptions and the Giants have just 97 yards rushing through their first two games.

The Eagles already notched their first division win with a 30-17 victory against Washington in Week 1 as slight one-point road favorites. Their late-game rally against Kansas City came up short in a 27-20 loss as 4.5-point underdogs on the road, but second-year quarterback Carson Wentz has shown the ability to get his team into the end zone with his playmaking skills. The key to Sunday’s home opener could be on the other side of the ball when it comes to Philadelphia’s ability to keep constant pressure on Manning.

Betting Trends
  • The Giants have failed to cover in four of their last five road games and the total has stayed UNDER in eight of their last 10 games played on the road.
  • The Eagles are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games at home and the total has stayed UNDER in six of the eight games.
  • Head-to-head in this NFC East tilt, Philadelphia has a 4-1 edge both SU and ATS in its last five home games against New York and the total has gone OVER in four of the last five meetings overall.
Final Prediction

These two teams always play one another tough in a series that has gone back-and-forth over the years. The Eagles have had New York’s number in recent seasons and with the Giants struggling to put points on the board, I am riding this trend with Philly covering the six points as one of my top NFL picks.

Game 2: New Orleans Saints at Carolina PanthersPointspread: Carolina -6Total Line: 47

The Saints have stumbled out of the gate with losses to Minnesota on the road and to New England at home both SU and ATS as underdogs in each contest. In typical fashion, Drew Brees has New Orleans ranked second in the NFL in passing yards while the ground game plummets to 28th. The Saints have also had their issues on defense in both yards and points allowed, but with the ability to put points on the board against a very familiar division foe, things should be much closer this week.

The jury is still out on the Panthers as legitimate contenders despite the 2-0 start (1-0-1 ATS). In victories against San Francisco at home and Buffalo on the road, Carolina’s defense has gotten the job done with just six points allowed. However, the Panthers are ranked 26th in the league in total yards and 23rd in points with Cam Newton leading the offense. Over the past two seasons, the four games between these two bitter division rivals have been decided by an average of just 3.5 points with Carolina holding the 3-1 SU edge.

Betting Trends
  • The Saints have covered ATS in nine of their last 11 road games and the total has gone OVER in their last five games.
  • The Panthers are just 1-5 ATS in their last six games against the NFC South games and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in their last five home games.
  • New Orleans has covered in the last four meetings in this heated NFC South tilt and overall the road team is 22-9 ATS in the last 31 games between the two. The total has gone OVER in four of the last five meetings.
Final Prediction

New Orleans slow start is more a product of the competition it has faced and, against a very familiar foe, I would expect a much better performance in every phase of the game this week. Carolina may have to grind out another tight SU win given its issues on offense and my ‘best bet’ pick is that the Saints will be able to keep things close enough to cover.
