Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Detroit Lions

Pointspread: Pittsburgh -2.5
Total Line: 46

The Steelers moved to 5-2 straight-up on the year and 4-3 against the spread with last Sunday’s 29-14 victory against AFC North rival Cincinnati as four-point favorites at home. This followed an impressive 19-13 road win against Kansas City as 3.5-point road underdogs the week before. The total went OVER 40 points against the Bengals after staying UNDER in Pittsburgh’s first six games. It is an even 2-2 ATS in its first four games played on the road.

Ben Roethlisberger only had to put the ball up 24 times in last week’s win and his 14 completions added up to 224 yards passing and two scores. Le’Veon Bell turned in one of his best games of the season running the ball with 134 yards on 35 carries and with Antonio Brown catching four balls for 65 yards and a score, Pittsburgh’s top three offensive weapons earned their pay in this game. Also, edit a Steelers’ defense that is now third in the league in points allowed (16.6)

Detroit’s encouraging 2-0 start both SU and ATS faded to a 3-3 record both ways heading into last week’s bye. After losing to Carolina 27-24 as two-point home favorites, the Lions were on the wrong end of a wild 52-38 loss to New Orleans their last time out as six-point underdogs on the road. The total has gone OVER in four of their first six games and they are 2-1 ATS this season at Ford Field.

Behind veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford, Detroit is 26th in the league in total yards, but it still jumps to eighth in scoring with an average of 26.8 points per game. Injuries have taken their toll on offense with Golden Tate out for the foreseeable future as his top target in the passing game along with Kenny Golladay, who has missed the last three games with a bad hamstring. The main issue in the recent slide has been a defense that has fallen to 19th in the NFL in total yards allowed and 28th in scoring with a points-allowed average of 24.8.

Game Betting Trends

--The Steelers have covered the spread in seven of their last 10 road games, but they fall to 1-4 ATS in their last five games coming off an ATS win. The total has stayed UNDER the closing NFL betting line in 20 of their last 26 games played on the road.

--The Lions have posted a losing 1-4 record ATS in their last five games at home, but they have gone a perfect 5-0 ATS in their last five games coming off a bye week. The total has stayed UNDER in their last four home games

--Going back over the last five meetings in this inter-conference clash, the underdog has covered four of five times. The total went OVER the total line in all five matchups.

Final Analysis

Pittsburgh is starting to look like the team that everyone expected to compete for the AFC title this season, while the Lions have taken a big step backwards towards making a return trip to the playoffs in the NFC. I am riding the hot team by laying the 2.5 points and taking the Steelers ATS as my top NFL pick in this contest.
