The preseason is just around the corner and if you’re wondering which teams are going to win their first warmup game, you’ve come to the right place. Check out our game-by-game SU NFL picks here.

Sure it’s only the preseason and starters are sure to see a limited play (a series or two at best, for the most part). But let’s not be churlish about it. FOOTBALL IS BACK! And what is the NFL without NFL betting lines and NFL picks to weigh in on?

The preseason offers up several intriguing matchups, such as the Seattle Seahawks locking horns with the Kansas City Chiefs, the New Orleans Saints going head-to-head with the New England Patriots, the Oakland Raiders descending on the Arizona Cardinals, or the nationally televised clash between the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Rams, amongst several others.

So without further ado, here’s our first instalment of game-by-game SU NFL picks. So exciting…

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles are rebuilding under Doug Pederson this season, hoping to put the Chip-Kelly mess last season behind them. Sam Bradford is the starter, which means he probably won’t get much play in the preseason. Enter Chase Daniels and No.2 draft pick Carson Wentz as the backups that are sure to show up in the preseason if only to put a case forward should the need arise in the preseason. Eagles have something to prove after the way they imploded in 2016 and with home advantage they could come through with the win. Particularly, considering the Bucs are comfortable with their quarterback situation – Jameis Winston has the starting job practically sewn up. Mike Glennon is an able backup though so he could make things interesting in this game. That said the Bucs under new head coach Dirk Koetter will more likely be looking to work out any kinks and not risk too much.

Free NFL Picks: Eagles to win -166 at Heritage

 Washington Redskins vs. Atlanta Falcons

Washington Redskins begin their NFC East title defense campaign with a preseason clash against the Atlanta Falcons, a side that started brightly before stuttering to an 8-8 SU finish. It’s Dann Quinn’s second year at the helm and he’ll be under the cosh one would think. He was brought in last season to fix Falcons’ defensive issues, but he didn’t look to have much success there It’s preseason though so he’ll be ironing out the kinks under the dome in this first preseason turnout. Where the Falcons have the edge over the Redskins looks to be in the backup quarterback role. Matt Schaub brings veteran experience to the table, which gives the Falcons a bit of an edge over the Redskins, who have Colt McCoy as their backup. Consider this game is going to be about the backups, Falcons do look like the better NFL pick, but only just.

Carolina Panthers vs. Baltimore Ravens

This is going to be a tough game to handicap for many reasons. The two teams couldn’t have enjoyed more contrasting fortunes last season, but most NFL bettors will agree that the Ravens should be better this season. Flacco is coming off ACL surgery so it’s unlikely he’ll get much playing time. Similarly, one would expect Panthers to go easy on their starters in this game as well considering they’re coming off a Super Bowl runner-up finish. Panthers have nothing to prove in this game, while John Harbaugh’s Ravens have something to prove.

Free NFL Picks: Ravens -120 at Bet365

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. NY Jets

The Jets have a great group of players but we doubt we’ll see much of them on the field when they host the Jaguars at MetLife. Todd Bowles knows what he has in his group, so the first game will be heavily dominated by the backups after a few reps by the vets to iron out the kinks. Jaguars are a young team, brimming with optimism. The coaching staff will want to see what they have in their camp, which means they’ll probably go for more than the Jets do.

Free NFL Picks: Jaguars +115 at WilliamHill

New Orleans Saints vs. New England Patriots

The Saints and Patriots collide at the Foxboro for a game many NFL bettors will be keen to watch. It’s quite likely Jimmy Garoppolo, who is the defacto starter for the first four games, will get a decent turn on the field. Bill Belichick will want to see what he has in Garoppolo and the chemistry with the starters. Saints team doesn’t impress many at the moment. They haven’t done so in a few seasons despite the quality of their offensive starters. Saints backups though are sure to get more of the playing time and there’s lots of uncertainty about the young guns.

Free NFL Picks: Patriots -174 at Heritage

Denver Broncos vs. Chicago Bears

The Broncos descend on the Bears in week 1 of the preseason, a happy reunion with John Fox as he gets to personally congratulate his former team for their Super Bowl win without him. The vaulted Denver Bronco defense is renowned – many have the Super Bowl win down to that component of the team. We’re sure to see a bit of them as well starting quarterback Mark Sanchez. However, they won’t play the full 60 minutes so anything can happen. Fox and the Bears might fancy their chances. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Bears take a more meaningful approach to this game. They’ll want to take the measure of such a quality team. We’re of two minds in this game, so we’re backing the hosts to the win but, probably, hedging our bets on the Broncos to cover in the ensuing game-by-game ATS picks piece.

Detroit Lions vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

The Lions will have something to prove in this game. Jim Caldwell’s Lions are coming off a forgettable season and they’ll be keen to use the preseason to iron out any kinks. Steelers, meanwhile, will be keen to get off the field without any key injuries. It’s unlikely we’ll see the starters play for long as a result. Backup edge goes to the Steelers with Bruce Gradowski as a stable veteran quarterback.

Free NFL Picks: Steelers -175 at 5Dimes

Miami Dolphins vs. NY Giants

This game is a bit of a tossup considering the many changing variables in each organisation. New coaches at the helm are sure to bring their own signature looks to these familiar rosters. We’ll see how those shape up in the regular season. For the time being, this is going to be mostly a backup clash one would think. Ryan Nassib gives the Giants the edge in our opinion as does an established system under Ben McAdoo, who was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach.

Free NFL Picks: Giants -150 at Pinnacle

Minnesota Vikings vs. Cincinnati Bengals

These two sides figure to be contenders on the season according to many NFL pundits. Andy Dalton suffered a hand injury late in the season; if he gets any playing time in this game it’s sure to be limited. A.J. McCarron gives the Bengals the edge on the NFL odds board, as does home advantage. That said both these teams boast solid depth and talent which should make it one of the most interesting games. It’s a tossup, really, but we think the Bengals might have the slight edge in its backup group.

Cleveland Browns vs. Green Bay Packers

There are no lines currently available for this game. It’s possible none will become available. Nobody is high on Cleveland Browns this season, so what can we expect from them in a game that will feature mostly their second-string and third-string options. Whichever way you slice it, Packers should win.

Free NFL Picks: Packers

Oakland Raiders vs. Arizona Cardinals

Inasmuch as the Vikings vs. Bengals promises to be an entertaining clash, so too is the Raiders vs. the Cardinals in week 1 of the preseason. Raiders are the young and exciting team with lots to prove. Cardinals are a well-oiled machine that will be keen to just work out the kinks and leave the field without injury. It wouldn’t surprise if the Raiders won this game. Heck, at the current NFL odds it’s a tempting bet.

Free NFL Picks: Raiders +140 at 5Dimes

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3010740, "sportsbooksIds":[19,93,43,238,1096], "LineTypeId":2, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]

Seattle Seahawks vs. Kansas City Chiefs

The Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs figure to be dominant teams in the coming season. These are well honed offenses and defenses so it’s unlikely that we’ll see much of the veterans. Back-up to back-up, take your pick. There is depth in both camps. Home advantage swings it in favour of the Chiefs, but nobody would be surprised if the Seahawks take it. As such, we’re of a mind to hedge our bets with the Chiefs to win straight up and the Seahawks to cover (check out our ensuing ATS game-by-game picks piece).

Free NFL Picks: Chiefs -150 at Pinnacle

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3010744, "sportsbooksIds":[238,169,300,43,60], "LineTypeId":2, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]

Indianapolis Colts vs. Buffalo Bills

The Colts will be extra cautious about their precious football bauble Andrew Luck in this game, especially against a Bills defense that is no slouch. Don’t expect Pagano to go all out in this game, but Rex Ryan might try something if only to rev up his side for the new season. No lines are currently available so check closer to game time for appropriate NFL odds.

Free NFL Picks: Bills to win

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3010743, "sportsbooksIds":[43,169,93,300,1096], "LineTypeId":2, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]

Dallas Cowboys vs. Los Angeles Rams

The nationally televised preseason game between the Cowboys and Rams is a must spot game. All eyes will be on Tony Romo and how he looks; assuming he gets a few snaps. Then there is the precious No.1 draft pick Jared Goff, who might get a lot of playing time for the Rams. Suppose the debut of the Los Angeles Rams to a nationally televised audience makes them the choice NFL bet. Cowboys won’t risk too much and the veterans won’t play a whole lot either. The Cowboys are sorely lacking in depth beyond that core group as well.

Indeed, of all the games on the NFL odds board, the Rams are priced the highest in straight up betting markets with NFL odds ranging around -200 or more. We think the Rams might just win the game, but we have to say we’re not loving the high price tag at all. Seems a bit overly optimistic. Could be a trap bet.

Free NFL Picks: Rams -200 at 5Dimes

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3010824, "sportsbooksIds":[19,92,1439,999996,192], "LineTypeId":2, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]

San Diego Chargers vs. Tennessee Titans

The Titans aren’t expected to make an impact in 2016-2017, but a preseason is a place where we might see them do better than most would expect. It’s a young team that will be eager to impress the new coach. Plus, don’t see Chargers or Philip Rivers getting up for this clash or risking a whole lot.

Free NFL Picks: Titans -148 at Heritage

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3010746, "sportsbooksIds":[169,43,19,93,300], "LineTypeId":2, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]

Houston Texans vs. San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers are in the midst of a big change and of all the teams in the NFL their quarterback battle is the most intriguing between Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert. Rumour has it both will feature significantly in this game. The Texans, meanwhile, will be careful with their selections and starters – they already have J.J. Watt less than 100% fit. Plus, while it’ll be important to give Brock Osweiler the feel of real action with his new team, he won’t be relied upon overly one thinks. Given Chip Kelly hasn’t decided who his starter is the quarterbacks in San Francisco will be looking to win this game and the starting job.

Free NFL Picks: Niners -158 at Heritage
