The postseason is upon us and Swinger is looking to make a huge run in his NFL playoff picks. After a wishy-washy regular season he has reviewed the NFL odds and targeted a few juicy plays hoping to add to our bankroll.
Swinger's 2014 NFL Record (25-24-2 -14.95 units)
Had we waited a bit longer in Week 17 to get down on our NFL picks, we would have gone 3-1 but instead we got the Browns +10 and Under 37 in the Cardinals/49’ers game which both landed square on the number. We cashed for 4 units on the Chiefs over the Chargers but flamed when the 49’ers could not cover the 5 ½ point impost and defeated Arizona by only a field goal.
Alas, it was a 1-1-2 day that saw us drop two units but it’s all shiny and new as the postseason is here and we are looking to do some damage to your man. Below are my NFL playoff picks for Saturday’s games. Please take a look at my Bust Your Bookie article for Sunday’s games as well. Let’s get this.
Cardinals vs. Panthers - Saturday 1/3/15 at 4:35 ET
I had to do a double take on the NFL odds that were offered on this one. I have been a skeptic when it comes to the Redbirds despite their 5th ranked points allowed defense. They have had a revolving quarterback carousel due to injuries sustained by virtually all of their QB’s which has of course affected their ability to move the chains and score touchdowns. The Cardinals are clearly a bend-but-don’t-break defense that is ranked 13th against the run and a stunning 29th against the pass. Stunning, because they allow an average of only 18.7 points per game which begs the question - why make Carolina almost a touchdown favorite? Well, now I’m starting to warm up to the notion of making the Cards one of my NFL picks.
The Panthers are clearly getting plenty of love from the squares who watched and marveled at their ability to decimate the Falcons, in Atlanta no less, by the score of 34-3. Carolina is currently on a three-game win streak but before you get all giddy about Cam & Company know that those other two wins were against Tampa Bay and Cleveland. In both those instances the Panthers failed to cover the NFL odds and sent their backers empty-handed.
My lean is clearly on the Cardinals in this one despite Cam Newton getting healthier and his offensive line playing better which has manifested in a more robust offensive attack. I believe the Cardinals defense will apply plenty of pressure and has the chops to slow down their rushing attack while containing Newton from getting out on the edge and doing what he does best. I also might be inclined to get a little taste of the ‘under’ in this one as I see this being played between the twenty’s.
Free NFL Pick: Cardinals +7 ½ (buying one point -130) for 3 units & Under 38 for 2 units at Pinnacle.com
Ravens vs. Steelers
The Steelers have been a veritable ATM machine down the stretch winning and covering the NFL odds in their last four consecutive contests. Big Ben & Company is also 4-1 ATS against the Ravens over the last three seasons and I see no reason why Pittsburgh isn’t sky high for their AFC North rivals. The Steelers pass rush has been absolutely en fuego with nine sacks over the past two games. Expect Hurricane Joe Flacco to get blown out (did you see what I did there?). I’m lovin me some Steelers big time!
Free NFL Pick: Pittsburgh -2 ½ (-145) for 4 units & Pittsburgh – 165 for 4 units at 5Dimes.com
The Woodman’s Corner (8-9 ATS, - 1.8 units)
The Woodman loved those Arizona Cardinals last week and they did not disappoint as the Redbirds hung tough enough to cover the all-important number against the Niners and inch our beloved handicapper closer to a .500 mark on the season. He is backing them again this week and lining up on the same side as your old buddy Swinger. Great handicapping minds think alike…sometimes. Arizona +6 ½ is his NFL pick of the week.
