Jags and Giants in Jersey on Saturday
The Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Giants will meet on Saturday in the second preseason game for both teams. The opening kickoff at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey is slated for 7:30 PM ET. According to current NFL odds at Heritage, the Giants are a 2.5 point favorite, and they have a posted total of 40.5.
Last Week’s Preseason Openers
The Giants opened the preseason with a 23-10 loss at Cincinnati. They failed to cover as a 1.5 point underdog, and the game stayed under the total of 36.5. They were outgained by a decisive margin of 432 to 224 total yards by the Bengals. The quarterback trio of Eli Manning, Ryan Nassib, and Ricky Stanzi were a combined 15-for-33 (45.4%) passing for 135 yards. They were led in rushing by second year pro Orleans Darwa. The undrafted rookie out of Tulane had 52 yards rushing on 9 carries, and accounted for the Giants only touchdown.
Jacksonville defeated Pittsburgh 23-21 at home last week and narrowly covered as a 1.5 point favorite. The game easily went over the total of 36.5. Their top two quarterbacks Blake Bortles and Chad Henne were extremely sharp. The pair combined to go 20 of 25 (80%) passing for 205 yards. Undrafted quarterback Stephen Morris from Miami Fla. entered in the fourth quarter and was 3 of 9 for 44 yards.
Gus Bradley enters his third season as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. During that time frame, Jacksonville has gone 3-6 straight up and 5-4 ATS in preseason games. Last week’s win over Pittsburgh was the first time Jacksonville failed to stay under the total during their last six preseason contests.
Tom Coughlin enters his twelfth season as head coach of the New York Giants. Ironically, he began his NFL head coaching career with Jacksonville in 1995, and remained in that position until the end of the 2002 season. During his time in New York, Coughlin has a preseason record of 24-22 straight up and 23-19-4 ATS. The Giants have gone 6-1 under the total in their last 7 at home, and that includes 4-0 during the last four if the number was 39.0 or more. Those four contests saw an average of only 26.8 points combined being scored per game. Since 2005 preseason, New York is a perfect 5-0 SU & ATS following a loss in their preseason opener with Coughlin in charge.
NFL Preseason Betting Angle
Since 1983, any game 2 home favorite of 4.0 or less, coming off an away underdog ATS loss in which they failed to cover by 10.5 points or more, resulted in that home favorite going 21-8 ATS (72.4%). I’ll have a small lean on the home side in this game for one of my NFL picks on Saturday.
