For the first time since the Los Angeles Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl, we will witness NFL football, albeit the preseason variety. Take a look at our same-game parlay picks for the 2022 Hall of Fame Game featuring the Jacksonville Jaguars and Las Vegas Raiders.

Jacksonville and Las Vegas had much different seasons in 2021, as Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence had a rookie season to forget, while the Raiders broke a four-year playoff drought. However, even though both had varying levels of success, each enters 2022 with a new head coach. Doug Pederson is back as a head coach after one year away from the game to lead the Jaguars, while Josh McDaniels gets his second stint as a head coach after two short years with the Denver Broncos in 2009 and 2010. Each coach’s imprint on his new team will be on display Thursday.

Here are my same-game parlay picks for the Hall of Fame Game between the Jaguars and Raiders (odds via FanDuel Sportsbook; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Same-Game Parlay Predictions for the Hall of Fame Game

Raiders -2.5 (-115)

McDaniels went just 2-6 in his eight preseason games in his short tenure as head coach of the Broncos. However, given some personnel decisions already announced by the Jaguars, the Raiders have an edge on Thursday, specifically at quarterback.

Pederson declared that neither Lawrence nor running back Travis Etienne will play. In addition, second-string quarterback C.J. Beathard was also ruled out as he continues to recover from a groin injury. That means Jacksonville’s quarterback duties are left to Jake Luton, who went 0-3 as a starter for the Jaguars in 2020. Luton threw for an average of 208.0 yards per game, had a 2:6 TD:INT ratio, and finished with a total QBR of 32.8.

On the other side, we have much more confidence in Las Vegas’ backup quarterbacks, assuming Derek Carr will not see the field. Nick Mullens has 17 career regular-season starts for the San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns, while Jarrett Stidham appeared in eight games for the New England Patriots. We expect those two to get the lion’s share of the snaps before giving way to undrafted rookie Chase Garbers.

McDaniels has been open about how sentimental it will be to play in Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium this week, as his high school football team (Canton McKinley High School) played games there with his father as head coach. Thus, the drive to win in a stadium so close to his hometown could force him to be the more aggressive of the two head coaches regarding personnel decisions.

Over 29.5 (-114)

This total plummeted from an initial opening line of 32.5 in the wake of the news that Lawrence, Etienne, and Beathard would not play. In addition, the betting public has also driven this number down, as 66% of the bets and 83% of the cash are on the Under, per Pregame.com.

If the total stays at 29.5, it would be the lowest total for any Hall of Fame Game in over 15 years. In addition, no preseason game since 2004 had a total set lower than 30.5 points.

The Under in the Hall of Fame Game has gone 12-7 since 2000 and at an even higher clip of 7-2 over the past 12 seasons. In addition, the Under is 8-4-1 in Pederson’s head coaching career in the preseason.

While the last 10 Hall of Fame games averaged 29.4 points, four of the last seven have seen at least 30 points scored. With two offensive-minded head coaches, we will fade the betting public and expect this game to exceed the projected total.
