It’s the first week of preseason games. Yupee! NFL is finally back! And so are we with our weekly column, game-by-game ATS NFL picks. Let’s get cracking.

Looking Back at 2015
It was a stellar season all around in the NFL with plenty of surprises, intrigue, drama, and shockers as well. Carolina Panthers proved to be a revelation, the Denver Broncos though emerged champions. Several teams took significant steps forward, none more so than the Oakland Raiders, and who are trending only upwards for 2016. Others took major steps backwards –ahem San Diego Chargers, Detroit Lions, NY Giants and San Francisco 49ers.

A lot of changes occurred in the offseason as a result – the usual mixed bag, new coaches, new schemes, new players, choice draft picks….la, la, la. Some of these are going to be trotted out before our very eyes in the first week of the preseason. We can’t wait.

So, without further ado, let’s just jump right into the preseason rundown of each and every game and serve up our choice NFL betting picks.

Oh, lest we forget, here’s a reminder of how we did in the regular season with this weekly column.

Regular Season SU Record: 148-108-0
Regular Season ATS Record: 131-119-6
Regular Season O/U Record: 133-121-2

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Philadelphia Eagles

The Bucs and Eagles had their fair share of issues last season, which prompted wholesale changes in their respective camps from top to bottom. Two new coaches are set to debut on the side lines of this game, each bringing a whole new team ethos and playbook to the field. As this is the preseason though we’re probably going to get a glimpse of what is to come and, for the most part, see the quality of the second-string team. For now Bradford is the starter and while they’re sure to want to see what he brings to the table in the new scheme, he’s probably going to make way for the backups to battle it out – Chase Daniel and Carson Wentz. The matchup boils down, therefore, to these backups versus Bucs’ backup Mike Glennon, a veteran journeyman who could make things interesting. Neither side is going to risk a whole lot but the Bucs could keep this closer than the NFL odds predict, if not win it outright.

NFL Picks: Bucs +3 (+100) Heritage

Washington Redskins vs. Atlanta Falcons

The Redskins go into this game at the disadvantage, which isn’t surprising really. In fact, it’s worth mentioning that every single road team in week 1 of the NFL preseason is an underdog, save for a few that are hanging on a PK line. It’s the week of feeling out each team and what they might look like in September, so it’s a tough one to predict. Then there is the backup component of the preseason to consider, second and third string players that are going to account for the bulk of the action. In this matchup, the noteworthy backup is Matt Schaub, who might give the Falcons that edge on experience. That said, we’re loathe to write off the Redskins entirely considering the defensive issues both teams still have. Worth considering the road underdogs to cover at the very least.

NFL Picks: Redskins +3 -115 BetOnline

Carolina Panthers vs. Baltimore Ravens

The clash between Carolina Panthers and Baltimore Ravens opened on a pick’em. Since it has moved to 1.5 points and in favour of the Baltimore Ravens, who are at home for the first preseason game. One could argue that home advantage is largely behind this move on the odds board. That and the fact that the Ravens have something to prove after their season fell apart in 2015. The Panthers we all know were one game away from becoming champions; that is, until they stuttered against the league’s best defense. Can’t imagine the Panthers have a whole lot to prove in this game, which could mean they’ll just go through the motions. Nor would a defeat in this game give them or their fans any pause.

NFL Picks: Ravens -1.5 -110 Just Bet

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. NY Jets

The Jacksonville Jaguars descend on the NY Jets for their first preseason lap at MetLife. The Jets are coming off a solid 10-6 SU season so Tod Bowles knows what he has in his starters. They’ll get some playing time but not a whole lot as the focus will be on ironing out a few kinks and evaluating the depth of their second and third-tier line-up. The Jaguars, meanwhile, have something to prove. It’s time to get over the hump and deliver on all the furious signings, mainly of the past two off-seasons. Jaguars are underdogs in this game, but if it comes down to the back-ups we’re not inclined to throw money on Geno Smith.

NFL Picks: Jaguars +1 +105 5Dimes

New Orleans Saints vs. New England Patriots

The Saints and Patriots collide in a highly anticipated showdown at Foxboro where all eyes will be trained largely on Jimmy Garoppolo. The third-year backup is slated to start the regular season for the first time in his career. Getting him game ready will be important. Drew Brees and the Saints’ offense can light up, but they’re unlikely to play for a long time. Saints’ D-line leaves much to be desired. More so where the second and third string players are concerned, one would think. Most books hang this game on a 3-point spread with the Patriots to the good, but the juice is hovering at -120 which is rather steep. Those bold bettors that feel laying an extra half-point with the Patriots is well worth the better juice should turn to Pinnacle. Heck, we’re feeling so brave.

NFL Picks: Patriots -3.5 +108 Pinnacle

Denver Broncos vs. Chicago Bears

The reigning Super Bowl champions present a stern test for the Chicago Bears in the preseason. It’ll be interesting to see how well the first-string team stacks up against the best defense in the league, for all of the few minutes they might square off. The game is served up on a pick’em line (at the time of writing), which probably wouldn’t happen in the regular season given the gap in quality between this pair. So it’s essentially a straight up pick. Things that have us going against the Broncos here are the post-Super Bowl hangover and veterans seeing limited action to avoid injury. On the flipside, the Bears taking this game a bit more seriously than their counterparts.

NFL Picks: Bears pick’em -106 Pinnacle

Detroit Lions vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Word is Lions look good in training camp, something that augurs well for their fan base desperate to enjoy a much more positive season than the disappointment that was 2015. Steelers had many injuries to deal with last season, namely to Big Ben. Of course, Mathew Stafford and his starters are unlikely to play for much of the game. Same goes for the Steelers, who’ll be eager to get off the field without any key injuries. This game is a bit of a tossup in our books. We’ve got Pittsburgh winning in our game-by-game SU picks piece. So we’re hedging that bet by shading the Lions to cover in what could be a close one.

NFL Picks: Lions +3 +100 Bookmaker

Miami Dolphins vs. NY Giants

Two seasons in a row the G-men fail to live up to expectations. The same could be said of the Dolphins. Both have new coaches and underwent changes in the offseason. How those materialise on the field is anybody’s guess. G-men have home advantage, the more stable system in place and the better backup quarterback as well, who’s been around for some time and knows the schemes. We’re going with the G-men with our straight up picks, but we’re on the fence about the field goal advantage. It be too many points against a defense that has some depth in its backup roster. Oh, what the hell. Fortune favours the brave.

NFL Picks: Giants -3 -105 The Greek

Minnesota Vikings vs. Cincinnati Bengals

This could be a bit of a battle between two very good teams in their own rights, with lots of depth on both sides of the ball. It’s a right tossup, as a result. Home advantage and AJ McCarron in backup gives the Bengals a slight edge, particularly where winning this game is concerned. However, the Vikings can’t be underestimated. They get up for these games, no matter what.

NFL Picks: Vikings +3 -115 William Hill

Oakland Raiders vs. Arizona Cardinals

In our game-by-game straight up NFL picks, we have the Raiders winning this game at the expense of Bruce Arians and the Cardinals. Ballsy, eh? There is excitement in their camp and an energy that is undeniable. Cardinals are a well-honed team that will look on this game to iron out kinks and rust ahead of the season.

NFL Picks: Raiders +3 -110 Bet Cris

Seattle Seahawks vs. Kansas City Chiefs

This is going to be one of the marquee games of the preseason. Two established teams with plenty of weapons on both sides of the ball. We’re sure to see the first string players get some action before the backups take over. This should be a battle in the trenches. There’s good reason to back either to win or cover, but, for our money, we’re shading the Seahawks. It’s not often that you get a chance to take 3-points with the Seahawks.

NFL Picks: Seahawks +3 -115 Heritage

Indianapolis Colts vs. Buffalo Bills

Dallas Cowboys vs. Los Angeles Rams

The relocated Los Angeles Rams enter their preseason game as the whopping -200 favourites to win straight up, which is the highest price tag on any team in the first round of preseason games. Bit of a red flag, don’t you think? It might be. Against the spread, some books are hanging the Rams as high as -4. Normally, we would be worried about these NFL lines and prices. Then again, the Cowboys are coming off a season in which they lost Romo to injury. The concern with injury is sure to be a factor in this nationally televised game as far as their account goes. Rams are debuting a new stadium, exciting new players... the atmosphere should be electric.

NFL Picks: Rams -3.5 -110 Bet365

San Diego Chargers vs. Tennessee Titans

Philipp Rivers and the Chargers had an atrocious 2015. So too did the Titans behind one of the worst accounts in the league. What to expect of both teams in 2016? Not a whole lot, if you ask us. Titans are the favourites largely because of home advantage. That and the game is meaningless to the broad spectrum of the season so don’t expect Rivers and Chargers to risk too much. They should do just enough before giving way to the backups. Youthful enthusiasm and seeking out opportunity in a developing Titans roster tips this game slightly towards the Titans.

NFL Picks: Titans -3 +100 Heritage

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3010746, "sportsbooksIds":[19,238,227,1096,169], "LineTypeId":1, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]

Houston Texans vs. San Francisco 49ers

Chip Kelly hasn’t named a starting quarterback yet, which means Kaepernick and Gabbert are sure to see a lot of playing time in the preseason. A lot is up in the air with the Niners. Consider the quarterbacks are playing for the starting job, winning games is going to be key towards their bid. As such, we’re backing the Niners on our NFL picks here. Texans will use this game to debut their new quarterback, but it’s unlikely they’ll risk him for very long.

NFL Picks: Niners -3 -105 The Greek
