Go Against The Grain & Shade The Under When Betting Titans Season Win Totals

Tennessee Titans

Tuesday, July 19, 2016 3:45 PM GMT

Expectations appropriately low with a 5.5 projected season win total for Tennessee, we serve up game-by-game predictions and determine whether the Titans do indeed crack this number or not.

Tennessee Titans 2015 Look Back
The Titans got off to a bright start behind Marcus Mariota’s week 1 account, winning the battle of the top two NFL draft picks when he led the Titans to a commanding 42-14 win over Jameis Winston and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It would be great to say there were more such bright spots in the rookie’s first season in the NFL. Alas, it was all downhill for the Titans as they finished bottom of the NFL pile with a 3-13 SU record.

Trading away the top NFL draft pick in 2016 to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a slew of NFL picks has allowed the Titans to acquire some much-needed depth on their roster. However, this is a side very much in rebuild mode with a long way to go before it can be considered a legitimate contender in its division, never mind the NFL. Tennessee Titans are priced at +1000 NFL odds to win the AFC South, quintessential longshots in the field across every single sport betting exchange.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that expectations are hanging low in projected season win total betting markets. Bookies roll out a 5.5 season win total for the Titans. However, interestingly, the Titans are favoured to crack this number with the OVER on offers of -150 NFL odds or thereabouts depending on your choice bookie. The UNDER, meanwhile, is trading at +120 NFL odds.

Do the bookies have it right as far as the Titans are concerned? Find out as we breakdown their NFL schedule and serve up choice NFL picks in this game-by-game predictions piece on which side of that mark we fall.

Week 1 vs. Minnesota, Sunday, September 11
Opening the season against NFC North champions Minnesota Vikings is a tough assignment for Marcus Mariota and the Titans. They’ll be under the cosh right out of the gates. Indeed, this will be a great litmus test for the Titans and how their offseason wrangling, wheeling and dealing measures up.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 0-1

Week 2 vs. Detroit (away), Sunday, September 18
A lot is being made about the Lions losing Calvin Johnson to retirement ahead of the 2016 season, but that presupposes the idea this is a bad team altogether. On the contrary, Matthew Stafford can be relied upon to win winnable games and this is one such game against a side that finished 3-13 SU last term and is yet to prove their acquisitions in the offseason are going to transcend the field.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 0-2

Week 3 vs. Oakland, Sunday, September 25
The Oakland Raiders are a team on the rise in the AFC West and NFL according to most NFL insiders. We’re of the mind to agree after some of the eyebrow raising results in 2015. It’s only fair to assume they’ll underscore those with a positive showing in 2016 and a win over the Titans does seem doable for Derek Carr, Amari Cooper and Khalil Mack, amongst several other notables.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 0-3

Week 4 vs. Houston (away), Sunday, October 2
The first AFC South showdown pits the Tennessee Titans against the AFC South champions Houston Texans in week 4 of the NFL betting season. J.J. Watt and the Texans defense is sure to give second-year quarterback Marcus Mariota a load of headaches. (Keep in mind, as far as second-year quarterbacks go, Mariota only started 11 of 16 games last season, none of which included the Houston Texans.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 0-4

Week 5 vs. Miami (away), Sunday, October 9
It’s hard to gage the Miami Dolphins. From season to season they are talked up and lorded in the AFC East and AFC Conference as potential contenders. Repeatedly, they’re left wanting. Last season, was forgettable. Where do the Dolphins go in 2016 is anybody’s guess. This is a game the Dolphins should win but the Titans could win. Oh go on, we’ll be charitable and serve up a win for the Titans.

NFL Picks: Win
Record 1-4

Week 6 vs. Cleveland, Sunday, October 16
Beating the Cleveland Browns has become the ‘done thing’ in the NFL in recent memory. Those that don’t can’t look in the mirror for the shame. As such, this is a winnable game for the Titans in our books and it shouldn’t surprise anybody if they do defeat the Browns at home.

NFL Picks: Win
Record 2-4

Week 7 vs. Indianapolis, Sunday, October 23
The Colts have the Titans’ number in no uncertain terms. There is no reason to assume that NFL betting trend, which is comprised of nine straight defeats, changes. Particularly, when Andrew Luck is expected back, in fine fettle and all the richer for his woes in 2015.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 2-5

Week 8 vs. Jacksonville, Thursday, October 27
Traditionally the worst outputs of the AFC South it comes as no surprise that these two teams have split their meetings quite regularly in recent memory. That NFL betting trend may well continue into 2016. However, we’re of the opinion the pendulum could swing one way – towards the Jaguars, who showed to have a stronger pulse than the Titans in 2015. It’s also a short week for the Titans.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 2-6

Week 9 vs. San Diego (away), Sunday, November 6
At face value, this looks to be a clash between an established quarterback in Philip Rivers and an NFL greenhorn in Marcus Mariota. On that score alone, it’s easy to tip the balance towards the former. However, this could be just one of those anomalies in the NFL that just don’t make sense. Arguably, the Chargers have many holes on both sides of the ball and Rivers simply can’t do it alone. Case-and-point, the Chargers’ 2014 season. Titans can fancy a road win here.

NFL Picks: Win
Record 3-6

Week 10 vs. Green Bay, Sunday, November 13
Green Bay Packers may be a different team on the road but this is a winnable game. Aaron Rogers vs. Marcus Mariota is a mismatch of huge proportions, never mind what the Packers et all can bring to the field.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 3-7

Week 11 vs. Indianapolis (away), Sunday, November 20
Marcus Mariota and the Titans face a tough assignment at Lucas Oil Stadium against the Indianapolis Colts. The Titans will be feeling the strain of an arduous schedule while the Colts will be coming off a week 10 bye. That’s advantage Colts, even though many NFL betting insiders are of the opinion the Titans are due a win at Lucas Oil.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 3-8

Week 12 vs. Chicago (away), Sunday, November 27
Titans hit the road for a second straight week before finally going into a week 13 bye. How the Titans hold up in the frigid temperatures at Soldier Field, one of the most unforgiving turfs in the league, remains to be seen. The Bears aren’t exactly looking like contenders this season either but John Fox and the Bears should be able to do just enough to quash the Titans at home.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 3-9

Week 13 BYE

Week 14 vs. Denver, Sunday, December 11
Granted the Broncos don’t have Peyton Manning anymore and their long time backup Brock Osweiler has absconded to Houston, but they still have a formidable defense that is sure to give Marcus Mariota headaches.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 3-10

Week 15 vs. Kansas City (away), Sunday, December 18
Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead is a frightening prospect in the middle of December. Last season, Alex Smith and the Chiefs steamrolled through their last ten regular season games, adding a win over the Texans in the wildcard round of the playoffs before bowing out of 2015. The Titans will be hard pressed to make an impression, let alone strike an audible chord in one of the loudest stadiums in the NFL.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 3-11

Week 16 vs. Jacksonville (away), Saturday, December 24
The Jacksonville Jaguars could potentially be poised to take the series sweep over the Tennessee Titans in week 16 of the NFL 2016 season. The Jaguars look to have more offensive weapons than the Titans do and so long as Blake Bortles and his O-line live up to expectations they should edge the Titans on their stomping ground.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 3-12

Week 17 vs Houston, Sunday, January 1
The Titans close the season against the Houston Texans at home, small consolation is home advantage against a ferocious Texans defence. It’s hard to see Marcus Mariota take the measure of the Texans defense, spearheaded by the spectre of J.J. Watt.

NFL Picks: Loss
Record 3-13

NFL Projected Season Win Totals for the Titans: In a word, no change. We’re predicting a similar 3-13 SU season for the second year in a row for the Tennessee Titans give or take a win or loss here and there. Frankly, it wouldn’t surprise us if they finished 2-14 SU or lower. In any event, the point is we don’t have the Titans cracking the 5.5 season win total, which is the expected result if the NFL odds were any indication. We’re going against the grain fading the OVER and shading the UNDER 5.5 at +120 NFL odds on our NFL picks or thereabouts depending on your choice sportsbook.

NFL Picks: Under 5.5 at +120
