Preseason Week 3 Recap
It all went tits up in the dress rehearsal: from surprise outcomes, major upsets and close calls to freak injuries, the latter of which includes Tony Romo breaking his  back, one of the most disheartening and worrying setbacks for both player and franchise.

NIKKI’s Game-by-Game Record in Preseason Betting, Week 1 to Week 3
SU 25-23
ATS 21-23-1*
TOTAL 22-18-3*
*(Two games omitted in week 1 for ATS and Total predictions, no odds available at the time of writing)

At 36 years of age and countless injuries to his upper body, Romo’s latest setback is a real concern. Not only is he expected to miss the first half of the season – some reports suggest as many as ten weeks of the regular season – the overwhelming question must be: how much longer can Romo sustain the quarterback position. For a second straight season, Romo succumbs to injury and with the timely reminder of Dallas’ 1-11 SU mark last term when he was side lined fans have a right to be anxious about the coming campaign. That neatly brings us to the franchise: without Romo what can Dallas expect from its upcoming campaign which is now going to be entrusted to fourth round NFL draft pick Dak Prescott. He’s impressed all and sundry in the preseason, no doubt about it. Ask anybody –even Jason Garrett – and they’ll tell you the preseason and season are mutually exclusive. It remains to be seen which way the Cowboys go in 2016-2017, up or down.

In the event, week 4 of the preseason takes on a whole new significance, particularly for the Dallas Cowboys as they must get their backup as ready as possible. Knowing the significance of week 4 to Dallas is going to be useful towards our NFL picks. As far as the rest of the field, 31 teams to be exact, it’s not so straightforward determining what they’ll be looking to accomplish in the last lap of the preseason. Still, we’re giving it a crack with these scintillating SU NFL picks.

Here goes….

NFL Wednesday, August 31st

Washington Redskins vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Redskins are 2-1 SU in the preseason and coming off a 21-16 win over the Bills in the nation’s capital. Similarly, the Bucs are 2-1 SU and riding a two-game winning streak into their preseason finale at home which includes a 30-13 evisceration of the Browns. There’s a lot to like about the Bucs – a young team with plenty of upsides. We like the Bucs to finish strong at home.

NFL Thursday, September 1

New England Patriots vs. New York Giants
The New England Patriots are riding the momentum of a three-game winning streak in the preseason. Most recently, they are coming off a win over Carolina Panthers on the road, a game that saw Tom Brady take a few snaps on the field and, not surprisingly, despite going 3 of 9 he still effortlessly floated a touchdown pass The Giants are coming off their first win in the preseason, beating the Jets 21-20. Underscoring that win is the worrisome account by Eli Manning and the first-team offense. To put it simply, they were abysmal. Completely pointless in the first half and unable to move the ball outside of their own territory they had absolutely nothing to do with the come-from-behind win. So it’s somewhat surprising they are favoured for week 4’s clash with the Patriots at MetLife. It’s nominal, though. Down to home field advantage and nothing else, and, importantly, a bet to avoid in our books. Patriots backed out to + 105 or higher has to be the choice NFL Pick.

New York Jets vs. Philadelphia Eagles
After opening with a win over the Jaguars the Jets dropped the last two games to the Redskins and Giants. Todd Bowles isn’t concerned overly as he knows what he has in his first team. Indeed, the first-string unit took the lead in the first half with the Giants all while holding Eli Manning and the O-line pointless. Eagles haven’t lost a preseason game thus far and Sam Bradford is coming off a solid account in the Eagles’ win over the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium. Eagles’ defense was also solid in the win. Given that the Eagles have yet to name their starting quarterback for the regular season and Carson Wentz looks unlikely to play in week 4 (injury), Bradford will look to capitalise on his last chance to put a case forward to be the starter.

Free NFL Picks: Eagles -200

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Atlanta Falcons
Jaguars are flush off a come-from-behind win over the Bengals, while the Falcons are coming off a loss to the Dolphins in Thursday’s round of week 3 NFL preseason action. It was the Jaguars’ first win and correspondingly Atlanta’s first loss in the preseason. The latter though was concerning as the game had overtures of some of the frustrating aspects we saw in the Falcons in the second half of the 2015 season. There’s also the injury list that swelled on the day too for the Falcons, which should prompt a more cautious approach in the final week from Dan Quinn. The fourth week of the preseason is a final opportunity for coaches to look at their players and trim down their rosters. It’s almost certain that those looking to clinch a spot will see most of the action. Makes it a tough call on our NFL picks as it could go either way. Push comes to shove, we’re backing the Jaguars, who look to have the momentum this week.

Tennessee Titans vs. Miami Dolphins
Both the Titans and Dolphins are coming off big wins in the dress rehearsal week, the former more so than the latter as Marcus Mariota and the Titans defied the NFL odds and upset the Oakland Raiders at the Coliseum. Both teams looked sharp in victory and that sets up a tough game to handicap on our NFL picks. It could very well be a closer game than the NFL odds makers would have it. Dolphins have home advantage so we’re giving it to them on our straight up NFL picks, but with a view towards hedging our bets on the Titans against the spread most likely.

Buffalo Bills vs. Detroit Lions
The Bills lost to the Redskins 21-16 as Rex Ryan shelved many starters in favour of backups vying for roster spots. That said are we buying what the Bills are selling anyway? It was a forgettable game in Washington. Now, as the regular season looms, the question is whether Ryan keeps his starters out of the game again. He said as much. The Lions are coming off a woeful loss to the Ravens, a 30-9 defeat at M&T Stadium which left Jim Caldwell with many concerns to mull over ahead of the regular season. Matthew Stafford, in particular, was abysmal in the first half of the game along with a slew of other players. If week 3 is a sign of what’s to come…yikes. Lions fans: be worried. The Lions were so bad last week they should be motivated for the final preseason game at home. As such, we’re picking the Lions to win but, admittedly, based on last week’s performance, the NFL odds are too high. Perhaps, they’ll come down over the course of the week and settle on a merit-worthy price.

Indianapolis Colts vs. Cincinnati Bengals
The Colts were torched by the Eagles in week 3 while the Bengals allowed the Jaguars to come from behind and win. Neither side will be concerned about the results of their respective dress rehearsal. It wasn’t a full game for the starters after all and not an important game. Or should they be? Well, maybe, the Colts should be. The offseason was all about No.12, throwing money at him and securing his services for the foreseeable to the detriment of shoring up the team. The verdict from NFL experts after week 3: the Colts are a mess and left guard Jack Mewhort’s injury could be damaging – he might be facing a season-ending injury.

Free NFL Picks: Bengals -200

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Carolina Panthers
Boy did the Steelers light up the Superdome or what in week 3. Big Ben looked sharp as did the team top to bottom. Think Mike Tomlin has seen enough of his starters in the 27-14 win to rest most for the preseason finale against the Panthers? Probably, he did. The Panthers were a bit sluggish by comparison in their 19-17 loss to the Patriots, in a game that saw the first-string offense play well into the third quarter and only muster up three points. Not a good sign and following the home loss the Panthers drop to 1-2 SU in the preseason. This is a matchup that’s difficult to predict in the regular season, never mind preseason where the lineups change significantly from quarter to quarter and many starters are sure to be rested. That said the momentum appears to be with the Steelers to finish strong.

Baltimore Ravens vs. New Orleans Saints
The Ravens are undefeated in the preseason, topping some solid teams in the Panthers, Colts, and Lions. The last lap was an impressive 30-9 win over the Lions, whose error-prone account did play a large part in the lopsided defeat. The Saints were feeble in defeat to the Steelers at the Superdome. On the strength of the respective accounts, we have to like the Ravens to finish strong in their preseason finale at the Superdome.

Chicago Bears vs. Cleveland Browns
This game is the right tossup, a decision between bad and worse. How does one distinguish between two of the worst performers in the preseason, and a pair of teams likely to be competing for the league’s basement spot; that is, if what we’ve seen so far is a sign of things to come. Ini mini miny moe… Bears.

Free NFL Picks: Bears +150
Best Line Offered: at 5Dimes

Green Bay Packers vs. Kansas City Chiefs,
The Packers are undefeated in the preseason and look to finish strong in their season finale at Arrowhead. The Chiefs, meanwhile, are coming off their first win of the preseason, 23-7 over the Bears – albeit the win was largely down to an error-prone performance by the Bears. Nothing went their way, really. Still, Alex Smith and the first string offense looked sharp so Reid can be pleased about his side’s production. McCarthy is sure to rest most of his starters for this game and one expects the Chiefs will do much of the same. It’s a tossup on our NFL picks but we’re going with the Packers regardless as they’ve been winning throughout the preseason largely behind the backup play.

Free NFL Picks: Packers +170
Best Line Offered: at WilliamHill

Los Angeles Rams vs. Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings look to close out on a high in their preseason home finale. The Vikings are 3-0 SU and ATS through the preseason, taking a workman’s approach to each and every game. The Rams, meanwhile, dropped their first preseason game at Mile High and drop to 2-1 SU. It’s hard to look beyond the Vikings given the way they’ve set about their preparations for the regular season.

Houston Texans vs. Dallas Cowboys
The Houston Texans looked amazing on both sides of the ball in their comprehensive win over the Cardinals in week 3. The Cowboys meanwhile were dealt a major blow to their campaign when Romo suffered a broken bone in his back. Enter Dak Prescott. Arguably, the surprise package of the NFL draft class of 2016 given the way he’s accounted thus far in the preseason. Whether Garrett plays Prescott for the duration of the game or not remains to be decided. Still, we do quite like what the Texans have done thus far and so we’re backing the Texans on our NFL picks.

Free NFL Picks: Texans -120
Best Line Offered: at Bet365

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3010810, "sportsbooksIds":[43,123,139,180,999991], "LineTypeId":2, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]

Denver Broncos vs. Arizona Cardinals
The Cardinals are coming off such an abysmal performance against the Texans that Bruce Arians can’t be pleased with all (Cards are 0-3 SU in the preseason). Carson Palmer was largely ineffective during his stint on the field and it was an all-round disaster until the latter stages of the game when the Cards revealed a pulse. Expect Arians will want a better performance by his team in their preseason finale at home, but it looks like the preseason might be over for the starters. Broncos, meanwhile, are having a spot of trouble at the quarterback position and while they’ve named Siemian as their starter for week 1 they’ll probably need to figure out the backup role. This game is a complete and utter tossup on our NFL picks.

Free NFL Picks: Broncos +170
Best Line Offered: at WilliamHill

Seattle Seahawks vs. Oakland Raiders
The Seahawks take on the Raiders in week 4 of the preseason at the Coliseum where the Raiders suffered a 27-14 loss to the Titans last week. Seahawks, meanwhile, are coming off a win over the 27-17 win over the Cowboys on Thursday. The fact that the Seahawks have more rest and time to prepare for this game tips the edge towards the road win.

Free NFL Picks: Seahawks +105
Best Line Offered: at Bet365

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3010811, "sportsbooksIds":[43,180,123,19,93], "LineTypeId":2, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]

San Francisco 49ers vs. San Diego Chargers
The Niners close their preseason at Qualcomm Stadium. Both the Niners and Chargers are coming off losses in week 3 of the preseason. The Chargers took on the Vikings 23-10 on Sunday. The Niners lost to the Packers on Friday 21-10. The advantage of rest tips the game towards the Niners, so long as the Kaepernick brouhaha doesn’t prove to be a huge distraction on the field. He’s promised to sit out another national anthem rendition…

Free NFL Picks: Niners +125
