Expert capper Nikki Adams is having quite the season with her weekly game-by-game NFL picks against the spread 43-20-0 so far. She now presents her week 5 picks, hoping to extend her roll.

NFL Week 4 Betting Recap

It was a fourth straight winning week for our NFL picks against the spread, having us improve to 43-30-0 through four weeks and 63 games handicapped. Quite good, no?

Nikki Adams Game-by-Game Picks Records SU, ATS and Totals

Week 4 SU: 8-7-0            (Overall Season Record: 40-23-0)
Week 4 ATS: 11-4-0        (Overall Season Record: 43:20-0)

Well, be that as it may, you’re only as good as the next week, right. So with that thought in mind we look ahead to the NFL betting slate and serve up choice week 5 NFL picks to spot.

Thursday, October 6, 2016Cardinals vs. Niners

The NFL betting line on this game has been hopping furiously. From an advanced serving of Cardinals -6 (last week at Westgate) bookmakers reopened with the Cardinals laying -2.5 on the road following Carson Palmer’s concussion. In spite of the question marks surrounding the Cardinals overall – what’s wrong with the offense? Where did the formidable defense disappear to? Who’s starting on TNF, Palmer or Drew Stanton? – would you believe the Cardinals are attracting the bulk of the betting at early doors. That says more about the state of affairs in San Francisco, the mess that it is right now. Clearly, nobody is buying what Blaine Gabbert and the Niners are selling and we’d wager that won’t change unless the NFL line is bet up so high that it triggers buyback value on the Niners. Or, in a singular genius move, Chip Kelly surprises all and sundry by starting Colin Kaepernick. Maybe Kaepernick isn’t the answer either, but, as it is, there’s no convincing argument that suggests the Niners offense is better with Gabbert. As such, it’s really difficult to even consider the Niners in this week 5 NFL pick for Thursday Night football.

Sunday, October 9, 2016Patriots vs. Browns

Hue Jackson, when asked about his thoughts of being Tom Brady’s first stop on the schedule, replied best, ‘no fun at all.’ The Browns can’t catch a break at all this season and to add insult to all their injury woes they’re set to be Brady’s punching bag on Sunday as he lets off his frustrations over the whole Deflategate brouhaha that marred his career over the last two seasons. It doesn’t help the Browns either that the Patriots et al are smarting from the 13-0 shutout meted out by Rex Ryan and the Bills at Gillette Stadium. This game could get very ugly fast.

Eagles vs. Lions

Philadelphia Eagles are coming off a bye week, bringing a perfect 3-0 SU record to Ford Field on Sunday. Carson Wentz has been a revelation for the Eagles, few expected he would start quite so brightly. When the Eagles emerged 2-0 SU behind wins over the Browns and Bears, there were those that suggested the Eagles might not be the real deal (yours truly as well, admittedly) seeing as they caught a break with a couple of lightweights on the schedule. When the Eagles stunned the Steelers 34-3 in week 3, it put paid on that notion. That win becomes even more impressive in hindsight when we look at the way the Steelers decimated the Chiefs in Sunday Night Football marking week 4. If the Lions are really as bad as their 1-3 SU record suggests, which is also underscored by a three-game losing streak, how can we not bet the Eagles?

Bears vs. Colts

The Bears are coming off their first win of the season, a 17-14 win over the Lions at Soldier Field with Brian Hoyer at centre. John Fox might have a quarterback dilemma for this weekend or Jay Cutler’s thumb may still be an issue thereby making the choice simple enough. Admittedly, Hoyer appears to be giving the Bears a better shot than Cutler which is significant for this upcoming matchup. He could lead them to victory against the NFL odds. That notion becomes more appealing when looking at the underwhelming 1-3 SU Colts, who not only lost to the Jaguars last week but did so in London. Shockingly, they’ve brazenly decided to forgo the customary bye that comes after a trek across the pond. This must be a bad decision by the organisation, one of many by Chuck Pagano and the Indianapolis organisation. Never mind such subjective opinions, how is it the Colts are laying -4.5 to -5 points in this game?

Titans vs. Dolphins

The Titans (1-3 SU) barely figure out how to win games but they know how to keep them close, which is something Tennessee fans can hang their hats on. The Dolphins are just inexplicably awful and really should be 0-4 SU ahead of week 5. There’s not a lot to like about either team at this point, but there’s one thing for certain there’s no way we’re laying any points with the Fins. They can’t be trusted. Take the Titans plus the points on your week 5 NFL picks.

Redskins vs. Ravens

The Ravens suffered their first loss of the season but it was a defeat decided by one-point. Easily, the game could have gone their way and they might have been 4-0 SU going into week 5. There are those that would suggest the Ravens aren’t as good as their record suggests simply because all their games were close and decided by a handful of points. Another perspective, if you will, is they gutted those wins out. A win is a win anyway. It doesn’t have to be pretty. The Redskins are riding the momentum of a two-game winning streak which includes wins over the Giants and Browns. They are 2-2 SU with a -3.5 losing record on average and a -4.5 differential versus the spread. This is a tough game to handicap in more ways than one. Do we like what Kirk Cousins is doing? Can he sustain it against a mean Ravens defense? Perhaps the Redskins defy the NFL odds and win in Baltimore, and the fairy tale comeback will continue for Cousins after he started 0-2 SU and calls for Colt McCoy grew in crescendo. Then again, we’re not betting the farm on it. We’ll consider the Redskins to cover though.

Texans vs. Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings join the Super Bowl defending champions Denver Broncos in the unbeaten ranks. The two are the only sides that are 4-0 SU (Eagles are also undefeated with a 3-0 SU record ahead of week 5) and, get this, the pair are also the only two teams with a perfect 4-0-0 ATS record. The Vikings also boast a 9.5-point winning margin for the season and a +9.9 differential versus the spread. The Texans bounced back in week 4 with a 27-20 win over the Titans, but, so far, they haven’t beaten a legitimate team. Until the Texans do, NFL bettors must consider carefully their merit as the road underdogs. Put it this way, if the Patriots can thwart the Texans in a 27-0 shutout, how will Brock Osweiler and the O-line fare against one of the toughest defenses in the league? Not so good.

Jets vs. Steelers

The Steelers served up an offensive masterclass in Sunday Night Football to ride roughshod over the Kansas City Chiefs. After such a visual delight, how can anybody consider betting against the Steelers for their week 5 NFL picks? Particularly, in a matchup with the 1-3 SU Jets who are conspicuously struggling on both sides of the ball. To borrow Hue Jackson’s turn of phrase, the prospect of this matchup is no fun at all. That said we’re not prepared to completely write off the NY Jets in this matchup. Keep in mind the Steelers laid an egg in a 34-3 loss to the Eagles only a few weeks ago. Often the Steelers can hit a bit of inconsistency.

Falcons vs. Broncos

The Falcons are riding high in the NFC South with a 3-1 SU record. They’re also littering the offensive stat sheets and Matt Ryan is an early candidate for MVP. Four games of a season is but a small sample, so let’s all not get carried away. Remember last year the Falcons went 5-0 SU before it all went tits up. This matchup is going to be a stern test for Ryan and the Falcons. Win this one and they’ll earn the right to be considered legitimate contenders. At the moment it would be overly generous to claim they are legit. Of course, there’s another consideration in this matchup as well: which quarterback Gary Kubiak starts. Is it going to be Trevor Siemian or Paxton Lynch? No word yet. Still, the Broncos are a great team and should win this game. Siemian has a bit more experience and gives them a better chance, but Lynch showed some poise in week 4 when he stepped in. So long as he doesn’t make too many rookie mistakes, the Broncos should be fine.

Bengals vs. Cowboys

The Cincinnati Bengals are struggling something awful. They are 2-2 SU and the lone two victories have come against underwhelming opposition, Jets and Dolphins (both 1-3 SU). Things aren’t looking smooth on offense mainly. That doesn’t bode well for Andy Dalton in a clash with the Dallas Cowboys, who seem to be firing at all cylinders with rookie Dak Prescott. On the defensive side of the ball, the Bengals stack up well and present the toughest test yet for the rookie. But if he continues to hold his own, there’s no reason to assume he might not win the battle.

Bills vs. Rams

The Bills are coming off a stunning 13-0 victory over the Patriots and improve to 2-2 SU on the season. The Rams are coming off an impressive 17-13 win over the Cardinals. Something is going to have to give when this pair collides in Los Angeles. Admittedly, this is a complete tossup for our week 5 NFL picks. We’re shading the Bills as the nominal road underdogs but we’re feeling no joy here.

Chargers vs. Raiders

The San Diego Chargers can’t seem to catch a break. They are 1-3 SU and riding a two-game losing streak going into week 5. They lost a rollicking affair in Indianapolis 26-22 and then lost a 35-34 shootout with Drew Brees. Both featured fourth quarter collapses by the Chargers that cost them the game. In the Raiders, they face a mirror opposite almost – a pass happy offense and a porous defense. The way both these teams are playing anything can happen.  Raiders are coming off a road win over the Ravens, prompting many to pound the Raiders at home. Sometimes what everyone sees isn’t there. The opposite happens. Besides, Phillip Rivers has to get it together at some point, no?

Giants vs. Packers

The Packers are coming off a bye week. They’ll be well-rested and raring to go against a team that appears to have lost the plot in recent weeks. Giants bring a two-game losing streak to Lambeau, underscored by a 24-10 loss to the Vikings in week 4. On the road, the Giants might be 1-1 SU with a -6.5-point losing streak and a -4.2-point differential versus the spread. Back-to-back road games against NFC North favourites though is a tough ask.

Bucs vs. Panthers

Bucs vs.  Panthers

Cam Newton is out with a concussion, which means Derek Anderson is set to lead the 1-3 SU Panthers into MNF. It’s not an ideal situation for a side that is struggling on both sides of the ball, but there’s an argument to be had in catching a break with the struggling Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Since an opening win over the Falcons Jameis  Winston and the Bucs have regressed behind a three-game losing streak. It’s so bad that even Dirk Koetter has called out his second-year quarterback. Whether that inspires the Bucs to bounce back remains to be seen. Still, the Panthers remain favoured at home, which is telling. It’s a tossup really on our MNF week 6 NFL picks but we’re taking the Panthers because they’re the better team.

Free NFL Picks: Panthers -5.5 (-106)
