Standout rookies Carson Wentz and Dak Prescott embark on a new rivalry when the Eagles and Cowboys collide in Sunday’s Primetime slot. Who will come up trumps? Here’s our betting preview complete with NFL picks.

Philadelphia Eagles (4-2 SU, 1-2 away)

The Philadelphia Eagles snapped a negative losing streak just in time for this highly anticipated NFC East showdown that most NFL bettors are sure to tune into. That the Eagles defeated the then undefeated Minnesota Vikings 21-10 as the +3 home dogs only underscore their merit as dangerous floaters.

The win was a timely reminder of the way the Eagles started the season behind rookie Carson Wentz, reeling off three straight victories before going into a week 4 bye and reaping a ton of plaudits. After the bye, the Eagles stumbled in Detroit (l. 24-23) and, then, in Washington (l.27-20), prompting many to wonder if they were all too hasty waxing lyrical about the No.2 NFL draft pick.

Returning from the disappointing two-game road trip, the Eagles saw their stock plummet massively at the sports betting exchange. Of course, a large part of it was also down to the fact the Vikings hadn’t put a foot wrong yet and were coming off a bye, well rested and raring to go.

In any event, the Eagles rose to the occasion and served up a bit of a shocker that sent ripples through sports betting circles. Not only did they win but they did so convincingly on the way to the huge cover (14 points exactly).

Now, with a second legitimate win to their credit (they defeated Pittsburgh at home in week 3) they do stack up rather intriguingly for Sunday’s NFC East tilt. However, they’re yet to get a signature win on the road, which it would be if they did upset the Cowboys at AT&T on Sunday night. As it is, the Eagles are 1-2-0 SU and ATS on the road with a 2.3 winning margin and +1.2 differential versus the spread. The only team they beat on their travels was Chicago. We all know how horrendous the Bears are, so it’s not entirely something to hang one’s hat on.

What we do know is that they can beat some heavyweight teams and it’s only a matter of time before they get it together on their travels.

Dallas Cowboys (5-1 SU, 2-1 home)

Everybody and their grandmother is clamoring on the Dallas bandwagon. Dak Prescott is proving to be a revelation, the bona fide surprise package of the season. So much so that Tony Romo’s career with the Cowboys does seem on the line. Indeed, if he backs up the win at Lambeau with a win over the Eagles in a nationally televised Sunday Primetime tilt, it could be the nail in Romo’s coffin. But that’s a narrative for another time.

For now, the Cowboys are the hottest team in the NFL riding a five-game winning streak. They are also second after the Patriots (6-1-0 ATS) with 5-1-0 ATS mark. That positive record against the spread is highlighted by an 8.7 winning margin and +9.1 differential versus the spread. As far as the differential versus the spread is concerned, there too they are second best after…wait for it…drumroll…the Eagles, who are 4-2-0 ATS with an 11.3 winning margin and +11.1 differential versus the spread.

Philadelphia Eagles vs Dallas Cowboys

There’s a lot to like about both these teams and what is a burgeoning rivalry between two promising stars of the future. From waxing lyrical about the respective quarterbacks to running down the stats and highlighting the many strengths on both sides of the ball contained within each camp, this promises to be a great matchup and one to tune into for sure. If only to erase the memory of last week’s snore between the Seahawks and Cardinals. (Hope we don’t see such a dull game this season again).

That’s the viewing covered. What about the NFL betting? Well, to be frank, it’s up in the air. Claiming one or the other is the unequivocal bet to make on your week 8 NFL picks, no ifs or buts about it, is gobbledygook. How can you distinguish between them meaningfully? How do you fade one or the other and be absolutely certain it’s the right move? It flies in the face of all that each side has accomplished thus far in 2016.

So, in a nutshell, the Eagles are viable dangerous floaters while the Cowboys are deserved home favorites. It’s a conundrum. Our NFL betting strategy then is to simply hedge our bets between the pair, by taking the Cowboys to win SU and the Eagles to cover as the + 4.5 road underdogs. Splitting our bets this way just increases the potential margin for victory.
