Thursday, October 13, 2016Broncos vs. Chargers

The Broncos look to bounce back in week 6 NFL betting when they take on the San Diego Chargers who are setting new heights for how to lose games spectacularly. Most concerning is the level of apathy coming from the players – there’s a sense of hopelessness about the Chargers that doesn’t inspire any confidence. Philip Rivers was flippant in his post-game presser, suggesting the Chargers may win out the season – not unlike the Chiefs who reeled off ten straight wins in the regular season to make the playoffs. He didn’t sound believable though and it doesn’t helo that coach Mike McCoy is sat on the hottest coaching seat in the league. Broncos have some issues of their own, namely Gary Kubiak’s health and the question marks at quarterback, but if there’s a team that can overcome adversity it’s John Elway’s meticulously constructed organisation.

Sunday, October 16, 2016Niners vs. Bills

It’s hard to bet against a team that is riding a hot streak such as the Bills are going into week 6 NFL betting. Then again does one really want to buy stock in Rex Ryan and the Bills each and every week? The Bills turned a corner in week 3 after firing the offensive coordinator and they haven’t looked back. Most recently, they are coming off back-to-back road wins over the Patriots and Rams. That spells confidence. Quite the opposite is the case with the San Francisco 49ers, who are riding a four-game losing streak into week 6. Rumour has it that Kelly is flirting with a quarterback change. Slotting Kaepernick under centre may well prove to be the catalyst that turns around San Francisco’s season. Until proven otherwise, it’s a risky bet here. Kaepernick is a shadow of the player that took the Niners to the Super Bowl four years ago. The Niners et al are a completely different team from the 2012 instalment. Probably safer to go with the Bills against a team that is floundering and doesn’t know who they are.

Eagles vs. Redskins

Kirk Cousins and the Redskins are another side to turn around their fortunes after going 0-2 SU in the first couple of weeks. Sporting a 3-2 SU mark ahead of week 6 they’ll be looking to extend their winning form to four in a row and with the Eagles suffering their first loss of the season there are those sharp NFL bettors that like what the Redskins are selling. Then again, the Eagles lost by only a point to the Lions and, by all accounts, were the better team in the second half. Clearly, they lost some of the momentum in the bye week and came out of the gates sluggish. Oh, and Carson Wentz threw an untimely first interception on the season that sealed the win for the Lions. Growing pains are necessary though in the development of a young quarterback. If he takes those lessons and applies them well, there is no reason to assume he can’t lift the Eagles to the road win in the nation’s capital. Keep in mind the Eagles still have a very good defense that could give Cousins headaches.

Browns vs. Titans

Nobody wants to see the Browns go 0-16 SU on the season, surely? One feels for them and the injury woes they’re forced to deal with from week to week particularly at the quarterback position. Cody Kessler went down with an injury, forcing the Browns to rely on fourth-string quarterback Charlie Whitehurst for the remainder of their date with the Patriots. Word is he too is banged up now. Fortunately, it looks like Kessler might suit up or, even, more promisingly, Josh McCown. Assuming either gets a shot in week 6, it’s not unreasonable to bet the Browns to win this game, is it?

Ravens vs. Giants

The Ravens fired offensive coordinator Marc Trestman, a move that worked for the Bills earlier this season. Will it prove fruitful for Baltimore? That remains to be seen but the offense has looked derelict despite a positive 3-2 SU record. Surely, it can’t get any worse? It’s also not as simple as: fire coach equals winning run of form. A lot hinges on the Giants as well, a wholly unpredictable side that can light up at any given moment. Right now, they’re as hot as an Arctic summer. Riding a three game losing streak their season has gone tits up and Eli Manning looks pedestrian (to put it politely). A defense need only say boo and he coughs up the ball. If he doesn’t get it together the Ravens defense will be all over him and the G-men.

Panthers vs. Saints

Jaguars vs. Bears

Jay Cutler may be ready to get back under centre but John Fox might not be so inclined. Brian Hoyer has done an admirable job in relief and unlike Cutler he seems to have the favour of both coaching staff and teammates. Assuming Hoyer gets to start at Soldier Field when the Bears welcome the Jaguars, Chicago have real shot of winning a second straight home game. Should it be Cutler, we’d change our week 6 NFL pick for this game without hesitation.

Rams vs. Lions

The Lions got a touch lucky with their second win on the season because the Eagles had all the momentum in the second half and had it not been for an untimely interception Philadelphia might have ridden it to victory. The Rams, meanwhile, are smarting from a 30-19 loss to the Buffalo Bills at home. Truth be told, this Is a complete tossup between two sides that can’t seem to find any consistency on either side of the ball from week to week. We’re chalking the win to the hosts but looking at the Rams to cover as the +3.5 road underdogs or thereabouts, thereby hedging our game-by-game bets between this pair.

Steelers vs. Dolphins

The Steelers are riding a convincing two-game winning streak that has many NFL bettors jumping on their bandwagon in the context of the season. Hardly anybody is riding the Dolphins bandwagon we’d wager after they slipped to a 1-4 SU start behind a loss to the Titans last week. If Ryan Tannehill continues to struggle how the Dolphins win any game is anybody’s guess. This could turn ugly in Miami very quickly.

Bengals vs. Patriots

The Patriots are off to a 4-1 SU start on the season and a 1-0 SU start with their beloved Tom Brady under centre. They return to Gillette Stadium for week 6, which marks Brady’s home opener this season. There they’ll face off against Andy Dalton and the Bengals. Dalton may be riding high on the stats sheets as far as yardage is concerned, but he’s only scored a measly five touchdowns, thrown two interceptions and suffered 17 sacks (the latter of which is the second highest after Andrew Luck with 20). Simply put the offense isn’t getting it done for the Bengals and that poses a problem against a quality side such as New England.

Chiefs vs. Raiders

Everybody is high on the Raiders as the trendy NFL pick except for yours truly. It’s a minor miracle that they are 4-1 SU on the season and tied with the Broncos for top spot in the AFC West. However, the close and nerve-wracking nature of their wins is a cause for concern. Derek Carr said as much in his post-match interview, how great it would be to win games more convincingly rather than rely on late-game surges and come-from-behind wins. This is a divisional matchup and the Chiefs, who are 2-2 SU on the season, will be up for this clash. They’ve had a bye week to prepare and iron out the kinks that were conspicuous in their first four games. If Alex Smith and the Chiefs get off to a strong start, their defense is such that could potentially halt a late-game surge by the Raiders.

Falcons vs. Seahawks

A win over Denver at Mile High makes the Atlanta Falcons a legitimate team, so say the NFL experts. But are they viable contenders in the broad spectrum of the season? That they faced rookie Paxton Lynch probably has many on the fence, hesitant to put up the Falcons as a real contender for Super Bowl L1. Defeat Russell Wilson and the Seahawks at CenturyLink before the famed 12th man and the narrative might not be so cautious. Certainly, it would the sort of victory to rubberstamp the Falcons in many NFL betting circles. The way they handled the Broncos D last week was simply brilliant, making it impossible for anybody to suggest an outright win here isn’t on the cards. It’s a real possibility especially seeing how inconsistent the Seahawks have been, not up to their lofty standards some would say.

Cowboys vs. Packers

Dak Prescott is playing so well that many believe he may have played Tony Romo out of his starting job. A lot hinges on the outcome of this matchup – beat the Packers at Lambeau and the rookie makes Romo’s return to the starting position almost untenable. Easier said than done. Consider this is the main narrative this week across NFL panels Prescott is likely feeling the pressure already, never mind when he actually steps out onto Lambeau field. A stadium in which many have found it difficult to win, not least of all rookies. Packers are riding a two-game winning streak and will be looking to continue the momentum in order to close the gap on the undefeated Vikings in the NFC North. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers can’t afford another loss given how well Zimmer’s boys are playing right now.

Colts vs. Texans

Brock Osweiller isn’t looking quite the quarterback the Houston organisation believed they’d pilfered from John Elway and the Denver Broncos. In two road games he looked clueless and out of sorts and struggled to get the offense moving. At home, he’s looked better. Only just considering the Texans faced a hapless Bears team, a struggling Chiefs team and a lightweight Titans team. This is the first home matchup against an elite quarterback and it remains to be seen whether Osweiler can lift the Texans to a win if it comes down to a shootout. If there’s one area where the Texans might catch a break it’s the Colts defense, which is porous and banged up amongst other things.

Monday, October 17, 2016Jets vs. Cardinals

Bruce Arians expects Carson Palmer to start on Monday night against the NY Jets. Does that raise the Cardinals chances to win this game according to the hefty NFL odds that are trading at the sports betting exchanges? To be honest, not so sure it does. Look at Palmers’ contribution when he did play – aside from a 40-7 win over a dubious Bucs the Cardinals looked utterly clueless in every other game. A lot of the market on this game is down to the NY Jets falling out of favour and off the proverbial cliff behind a 1-4 SU mark through five weeks of NFL betting. Finger pointing zeros in on Fitzpatrick, whose stats are an excruciating read: a league-leading 10 interceptions, 9 sacks and just 5 TDs for a 64.7 passer rating. Palmer with an 81.9% passer rating isn’t as bad but he does have 5 interceptions, 6 TDs and has been gotten to 12 times (sacks). To put it simply, neither quarterback inspires confidence. What could be the difference is twofold a) Fitzpatrick is under the cosh and playing for his job, while b) Palmer might still be a bit woozy from his concussion and that might leave him a bit more hesitant than before. It’s a longshot NFL pick but fortune favours the brave, so they say. We’re going with the Jets to finally stop the rot and get a pivotal W.
