   Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Tennessee Titans
Point Spread Value

As far as a Thursday Night showdown goes there’s not much to get excited about for this matchup, is there? Let’s face it, neither team strikes a particularly convincing pose on the season. Unpredictable, inconsistent, punch-less, lack of identity…those are just some of the words and thoughts that spring to mind on the rare occasion one considers this pair. The upshot of which is an NFL betting conundrum. Dilemma, dilemma.

Going against the Titans is a dreadful 0-4 ATS mark at home, hampered by a -5.5 losing margin on average and a -7.4 differential versus the spread. You almost want to tickle the Jags on your week 8 NFL picks on those stats alone. But consider the quality of the opponents: Minnesota, Oakland, Cleveland, and Indianapolis – three out of the four have some of the best quarterbacks in the league and, at least, two of those are in contention right now for the playoffs. Perhaps, some allowance can be made for the Titans in those losses and misses against the spread. Jaguars may be 1-1 ATS on the road but they lost to the mercurial Chargers 38-14 in San Diego and defeated the hapless Chicago Bears 17-16 at Soldier Field. Hardly a ringing endorsement of their NFL odds, nor does it scream dangerous floaters.

Essentially, this is a decision about who is worse. At least that’s the approach here and it’s the humble opinion of yours truly the Jags are worse than the Titans. Put another way, they’re not playing to their perceived potential and that makes them worse than the Titans who weren’t expected to compete meaningfully this season at all. As such, we’re shading the Titans on our week 8 NFL picks. Just don’t go betting the farm on it, yeah?

The Survivor

Titans are at home and coming off a loss to the Colts in week 7 at Nissan Stadium. Jaguars are on the road and still reeling from a loss to the Raiders. It’s a short week for this pair, so little time to regroup and recoup from week 7. Jaguars are 1-1 SU and ATS on the road while the Titans are 1-3 SU and 0-4 ATS at home.

If there’s one thing that tips the scale towards the Titans, it’s how badly Blake Bortles played in the home defeat to the Raiders last Sunday. Granted it’s never advisable to react solely on one game, but the reality is Bortles isn’t cutting it this season at all. The third-year quarterback is trending negatively, from game to game he seems to be getting more indecisive, uncertain and unreliable. Isn’t it supposed to be the other way around? Experience begets confidence and improvements.

Dunno what the problem with Jacksonville’s starter is, but, for all the hype and build up surrounding the Jags in preseason, they’re found propping up the AFC South with a 2-4 SU mark and a 3-3-0 ATS mark that includes a 7.2 losing margin on average and a -5.8 differential versus the spread. Unacceptable is a word that springs to mind. So how can we put down good money on the Jags or go against the bookies in good conscience?

Game Total

The way Blake Bortles is regressing it’s impossible to feel any confidence in the O-line. Heck, they’ve mustered up just 117 points through six games for an average of 19.5 points scored per game. To counter that they are conceding almost 27 points per game. On the flipside, the Titans go from dreadful in the first few weeks, to passable in the last few weeks thanks to the O-line perking up and the run game making some inroads. In their last three games, they’ve put up 84 points and conceded 77 points: and in their last four games, the OVER cashed. On the strength of the Titans offense, there’s a good chance this game might go OVER the total currently trading.
