   Arizona Cardinals vs Carolina Panthers
 Point Spread Value

The Panthers don’t inspire much confidence with 1-5 SU and ATS record, highlighted by -2.5 losing margin on average and a whopping -7.5 differential versus the spread. Not good at all. What makes the depressing record worse is that it went against the NFL odds. From week to week the Panthers were favored but crashed and burned instead.

Question: do the Cardinals strike a convincing pose? Granted they are a much better 3-3-1 SU and 3-4-0 ATS with a 7.0 winning margin on average and a plus .8 differential versus the spread, but who did they beat and cover against? Tampa Bay in week 2 (-7.5), San Francisco in week 5 (-3.5) and NY Jets in week 6 (-7.5). It’s also worth pointing out the Cards are just 1-1 SU and ATS on the road with -1.5 losing margin and a -5.8 differential versus the spread.

We must all be able to agree that the aforementioned list doesn’t represent a single contender in the game according to current standings. Then there is the fact that the Bills took the Cards to the woodshed in week 3. Putting all those together one could argue the Cards are really no better than the Panthers right now. Both look to be suffering post-playoff blues, and, so far, neither has shown any sign of moving forward.

If there’s one thing that does tip the scale towards the Panthers (ever so slightly) potentially getting it together this week, it’s having a bye in week 7. They’re well rested. Time to reflect and refocus. Meanwhile, Cards are coming off an awful 6-6 tie to the Seahawks at home. Another setback that is sure to weigh heavily on their shoulders. To be fair, it’s a tossup NFL pick…but, when in doubt, err on the side of the home team.

The Survivor

It’s been a disappointing start to the season for the NFC champions, Carolina Panthers. Looking at a 1-5 SU start and propping up the NFC South, the Panthers are down but not out. Fortunately, the NFC South as a whole isn’t made up of heavyweights. The Falcons currently ride roughshod over the division but they’re only 4-3 SU through seven games. Tampa Bay sit in second with a 3-3 SU record while New Orleans Saints are third with a 2-4 SU record.

The Panthers must feel that it’s within the realm of possibility to close the gap if they win out the rest of the season just as the Chiefs did last term. Just as they did two seasons ago. To start this turnaround a date with Arizona Cardinals may seem daunting on paper. In reality, it isn’t. Cards haven’t beaten a quality team this season and on the road they are just 1-1 SU with a win over the Niners. Whoop-tee-doo! Until they beat somebody of note this season, they’re just not that good. That levels the playing field in our books. Hence, home team does have a shot.

Game Total

The Cards are a shadow of their 2015-self too. Something is off with Carson Palmer and the O-line and the defense isn’t up to snuff, which is why the Cards descend on the Bank of America Stadium with a 3-3-1 record. Last week’s 6-6 tie is no exception, made worse by the failure of special teams and, even, the kicker wasn’t immune to whatever hex hangs over the Cards. In any event, just don’t trust this team at all.

The Panthers O-line, by contrast, has put up the points. The defense has been suspect though. If they’ve addressed those issues during the bye week then it’s very possible we’ll see a much better account on both sides of the ball. It’s all a bit speculative here. It can go either way, but the inconsistency of the Cards offense is the main reason that makes the UNDER the choice bet in our books.
