The AFC North clash between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens features prominently on the NFL odds board in week 9. We weigh in on this clash with SU, ATS and Total picks to spot.

    Pittsburgh Steelers vs Baltimore Ravens

Point Spread Value

At the time of writing, Big Ben’s status is up in the air. That sends the Steelers into the pivotal divisional clash with the Ravens at the disadvantage in every sense, on the field and the NFL odds board. The Steelers currently hang at +3 with most sportsbooks. Some have the Steelers hanging on +2.5 (The Greek and BetOnline, to name a few) while others have gone down to +1 (such as Pinnacle).

Will the NFL odds find uniformity across the board if Big Ben finds a way to play? They definitely might and it wouldn’t be surprising if this game resulted in a PK line across the board by closing doors under the circumstance he would play. But ask yourself this before placing your week 9 NFL picks for this game: will he be 100% fit. Probably not. Then there is also the fact that Big Ben is 0-3 in his last three trips to Baltimore. With Big Ben, the Steelers cold keep this game close as the NFL odds suggest, but they’ll be hard-pressed to win.

The Survivors

The Pittsburgh Steelers currently sit atop the AFC North with a 4-3-0 SU mark, a position the Cincinnati Bengals could have snatched from them but for settling on a 27-27 draw to the Washington Redskins in London on Sunday. Pittsburgh got a reprieve considering Big Ben’s injury and sitting out week 8 on a bye. In fact, the missed opportunity serves the Ravens rather well too, who are third in the table with a 3-4-0 SU mark and also sat out week 8 on a bye. The negative trend in the AFC North (all four sport losing records going into week 9) leaves this section totally wide open, up for grabs by the side adventurous enough to step up to the plate. That puts a premium on the win in no uncertain terms. Given the Steelers have too many question marks at quarterback and injuries from top to bottom, it’s advantage Baltimore, you’d think. They’re the home team as well and that counts.

 Game Total

The Ravens offense is as explosive as popping candy. To date, they’ve put up a measly 133 points and conceded 139 points. Predictably, they’re at the bottom of the charts with a 3-4-0 OVER record this season underscored by a -4.6 differential versus the total on average. The Steelers offense is a tougher one to predict considering the question marks over Big Ben. It’s decidedly more potent when he’s calling the shots, but (as mentioned above), even if he does start this game, how effective will he be? Humanly impossible for him to be fit as a fiddle.
