The Eagles and Giants are looking up at the Cowboys in the NFC East standings, making their date a must win in the broad spectrum of the season. Find out where the value is to be had for your week 9 NFL picks.

    Philadelphia Eagles vs N.Y. Giants

Point Spread Value

The Eagles look to snap a three-game losing streak on the road, but a well-rested G-men could prove a daunting task according to the odds makers. Does the market have it right?

As it is, the Eagles hang anywhere from +2.5 to +3 on the NFL odds board, which is in their wheelhouse, if you will. The Eagles may be 1-3-0 ATS on their travels but they do sport a 0.2 losing margin on average and a +0.6 differential versus the spread. Importantly, two of the three losses against the spread happened when the Eagles were probably overcooked in the market: Eagles closed at -3.5 away to the Lions but lost 24-23; and, a week later, they closed as the -3.0 road chalk to the Redskins only to lose 27-20.

Losing to the Cowboys (flush off a week 7 bye) 29-23 in overtime after failing to put the game away in the fourth quarter must weigh heavy with Philadelphia. It does take the shine off of their NFL odds particularly in the face of a second road game in as many weeks and, ironically, a second straight NFC East opponent that is coming off a bye. That’s if you want to be so dour about it. A more positive outlook would be to consider the incentive the bitter loss to the Cowboys must provide. Let’s face it, the Eagles had Dak Prescott and the Cowboys on the ropes for the better part of the game until they allowed the Cowboys back into it in the fourth quarter. If they take those positives and avoid similar such mistakes at MetLife, they must be able to fancy their chances. At the very least, to keep this game close if not win it outright.

The Survivor

The chips appear to be stacked with good reason against the Philadelphia Eagles. Since a week 4 bye, they’ve been a miss at the sports betting exchange going 1-3 SU and ATS – the only bright spot a noteworthy win over the Minnesota Vikings at home. All that is well and good and might provide NFL bettors good reason to go against the Eagles for their week 9 SU NFL picks. But before shading the Giants maybe consider the teams they’ve beaten at home this season. Saints, Ravens and Rams hardly make up the list of glitterati in the league.

To be fair, the G-men are a bit of a hit and a miss too. Consider very little separates the Giants and Eagles right now – both are 4-3 SU ahead of week 9 and neither has a particularly favourable divisional record: Giants are 1-1 while the Eagles are a worse 0-2. Indeed, the Eagles can ill afford another divisional loss if they hope to have a viable shot at the playoffs.

Here’s another thing to consider: the bye week isn’t always the charm it’s cracked up to be and if past trends reveal something the Giants aren’t immune: since 2013, they are 1-2 SU and 0-3 ATS coming off a bye with a -6.0 losing margin on average and a -7.8 differential versus the spread.

Game Total

The Eagles defense is one of the stoutest in the league allowing the third fewest in the league with 117 points conceded through seven games. The Giants are improved on the defensive side of the ball and have conceded just 141 points. Problem for the hosts is the unreliability of their offense which is underperforming (133 points scored thus far).  The divisional context plus the defensive prowess of both teams suggests this will be a battle of attrition at MetLife.
