The Saints look to keep the momentum going with a second straight win over an NFC West opponent. Consider they beat the Seahawks, the Niners should be a cake walk. Here’s our mini-preview replete with NFL picks.

New Orleans Saints vs San Francisco 49ers

Point Spread Value

Who could have predicted the Saints would ever enter a road game this season laying points. The way they started, going 0-3 SU and 1-2 ATS, things looked dire for Sean Payton and his precious Saints. Then a win in week 4 over the San Diego Chargers rejuvenated the Saints and sent them into a week 5 bye with their season semi-salvaged. Following the bye, the Saintes emerge with a 2-1 SU and ATS record, none more impressive than the 25-20 win over the Seattle Seahawks at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome last week. That very win alone turned the NFL betting market in their favour for this second straight NFC West clash. Well, that and the fact that nobody is buying what the Niners are selling. They are 1-6-0 ATS on the season with a -10.7 losing margin on average and a -5.6 differential versus the spread. To put it simply, they are the worst team in the NFL to bet on at the exchange.

The Survivor

Not to sound like a broken down record, but it bears repeating: nobody is buying what the Niners are selling. Chip Kelly’s side is a mess, a team with no identity and chemistry on either side of the ball. The 28-0 win over the Rams must seem a lifetime ago as they reel off six straight losses and a 0-6-0 ATS record. The Saints might not cut an overly convincing figure with a 3-4-0 SU record but they are playing with more heart and intensity for their coach than the Niners are right now.

Game Total

There is no denying the potency of the Saints offense with gunslinger Drew Brees under center. In seven games they’ve totted up 201 points (for an average of 28.7 points per game). The defense has been a sticking point with 215 points conceded (for an average of 30.7 points per game), but , in recent weeks they’ve brought that number down to 23.5 points conceded. Impressively, they did that against defensively sound Chiefs and Seahawks. Is this a sign the defense has turned the corner? Perhaps. One thing is certain, the Niners offense hardly looms formidable.
